Getting Beyond Better: How Social Entrepreneurship Works, by Roger L. Martin, Sally Osberg

Who drives transformation in society? How do they do it?

In this compelling book, strategy guru Roger L. Martin and Skoll Foundation President and CEO Sally R. Osberg describe how social entrepreneurs target systems that exist in a stable but unjust equilibrium and transform them into entirely new, superior, and sustainable equilibria. All of these leaders—call them disrupters, visionaries, or changemakers—develop, build, and scale their solutions in ways that bring about the truly revolutionary change that makes the world a fairer and better place.

The book begins with a probing and useful theory of social entrepreneurship, moving through history to illuminate what it is, how it works, and the nature of its role in modern society. The authors then set out a framework for understanding how successful social entrepreneurs actually go about producing transformative change. There are four key stages: understanding the world; envisioning a new future; building a model for change; and scaling the solution. With both depth and nuance, Martin and Osberg offer rich examples and personal stories and share lessons and tools invaluable to anyone who aspires to drive positive change, whatever the context.

Getting Beyond Better sets forth a bold new framework, demonstrating how and why meaningful change actually happens in the world and providing concrete lessons and a practical model for businesses, policymakers, civil society organizations, and individuals who seek to transform our world for good.

Interesting, but...
By Autamme_dot_com
Change is usually led or inspired by a few, their actions creating a wave and latterly change as people either follow suit, adapt or switch course. Not every pioneer will effect change and one current term de jour is “social entrepreneur” and in this book the authors argue that such people are helping push change by observing systems and technologies that are ripe for transformation, sometimes going out on a limb, but nonetheless trying…

This is a bit of a specialist read, looking at the theory of social entrepreneurship, its activities in history and how it works in the present day. A framework has been designed by the authors to try and explain how successful social entrepreneurs actually go about producing meaningful, transformative change, split between four key stages of understanding the world, envisioning a better future, building a model for change and scaling up the solution.

Despite the book containing a lot of powerful information, it deserves to be more accessible and inviting; as it stands it might not get such a wide audience as it deserves.

Many people today may try and shoehorn powerful figures of the past into the role of social entrepreneur. The author highlights Mother Theresa or Martin Luther King Jr. as prime candidates that, despite doing great works, are not social entrepreneurs, noting: “Without question, each of these leaders had enormous impact on the world. But were they social entrepreneurs? Calling them by this name, as some might be inclined to do, is based on a desire to validate important work leading to real and significant social benefits. While such an impulse is understandable, it is also unhelpful. If the term social entrepreneurship is used to characterize every act of leadership generating public benefit, it will simultaneously become everything and nothing. Striving for social good, as Mother Theresa did, or advocating for social justice as Martin Luther King did do not mark one as a social entrepreneur, nor does creating a business that happens to help the world while driving profit, as Henry Ford did.”

Yet the authors bring up Andrew Carnegie, viewed by many as a “robber baron” for his union-busting activities, whilst supporting union rights at a time when he was the richest person in U.S. history and he then sought to give it away. Carnegie, they argue, is a social entrepreneur as he used his insight, riches and position to do things such as fund libraries in the U.S. and many other countries. Access to education and enlightenment was being democratised and brought closer to the average person who did not have a vast private family library or restricted university library at their disposal. Once Carnegie started to fund public libraries, others did too and now a century later the library is still a very important institution.

Once a social entrepreneur has been defined, moving forward with seeking to develop a way for “future Andrew Carnegies” to function is the goal of the authors. It need not necessarily be a massive gesture; many smaller gestures can work and lead the masses to great things.

In places it felt as if the book was losing its way, getting thrown around on the literary high seas and not moving forward, despite it being an engaging subject to consider. It may be a book worthy of persevering with, should you have a need, but it is probably not going to fall into the casual, general reader’s lap; in many ways that is a shame as it does give a lot of interesting insight if you can successfully extract it.

Important book and a good read
By Amazon Customer
Highly recommend! Martin and Osberg have written a book that shines new light on the concept of social entrepreneurship – and, more broadly, achieving widespread social change. The book is not a “how to” handbook for social entrepreneurs (although surely will be useful to them), but rather offers an interpretive guide that helps us make sense of one of the most important phenomena in the world today: social entrepreneurship.

Take the idea of “shifting an equilibrium”, which Martin and Osberg highlight as at the heart of the work of social entrepreneurs. That lens calls for an analysis of what forces keep the status quo as it is – not painting a portrait of an inert context, but understanding the set of reinforcing dynamics that keeps things as they are. Only by doing that analysis can we understand what levers might fundamentally change the equilibrium. Of course, this idea echoes writers that talk about system theory, is consonant with on-the-ground innovators like Bill Drayton whose work with entrepreneurs at Ashoka aims for broader changes in systems, and also is reflected in the work of funders like Omidyar Network (and the Skoll Foundation, which is led by Osberg and where Martin sits on the Board) that focuses on the interplay between the entrepreneurs and their enabling context. But this book illuminates the relationship between the entrepreneur and shifting the equilibrium in fresh and useful ways that help us make sense of these disparate threads.

While the book is propelled by the stories of remarkable organizations and people, the heart of the argument is not just about their personal, heroic qualities. Rather it is about how they managed to understand and move complex systems – typically not via an amazing new technology or the replication of a single solution, but via, for example, the hard work of shifting and strengthening the health care infrastructure in country (PIH) or moving the social norms and self-empowerment of a community (Tostan’s work in Senegal.) Where the authors discuss the characteristics of the entrepreneurs, it is by identifying a compelling set of tensions with which the leaders grapple – abhorrence and appreciation, expertise and apprenticeship, and experimentation and commitment.

The last few chapters of the book offer a guide to factors that may facilitate the odds of scaling up solutions, highlighting factors such as managing costs down aggressively, open source platforms for sharing, adding value to existing assets, reducing labor costs. These categories are intuitively compelling, and several are strangely absent from the existing writing on social entrepreneurship and scale. I hope the final few chapters will be a provocation to others to conduct research on these factors. For example, the authors’ focus on the role of cost brings under the microscope a factor that is a core dynamic driving firms, industries, and disruption in the for-profit sector – and in the social sector outside the US (where designing for scale and low unit cost is often THE starting point) – but which is only occasionally visible in dynamics that unfold in the US. Why is that? Similarly, under what conditions does an “open source platform” lead to the spread of ideas versus being one more failed “build it and they will come” strategy? These questions go beyond the scope of the book, but are prompted by it—a sign of a provocative argument that points to the next step of questions we need to explore as a field.

An important contribution and a good read!

The Skoll Foundation, including its CEO Sally Osberg and board member Roger Martin has been at the center of curating the top social entrepreneurs in the world. This book is insight, very readable and represents a 'must read' for anyone interested in a world that drives more freedom, health and prosperity for all seven billion of us. While there are many books you might pick up I found this one distilled both the challenges and the way forward from the people who have been at the forefront of global change.

Grief-stricken after his mother's death and three years of wandering the world, Victor is longing for a family and a sense of purpose. He believes he's found both when he returns home to Seattle only to be swept up in a massive protest. With young, biracial Victor o one side of the barricades and his estranged father--the white chief of police--on the opposite, the day descends into chaos, capturing in its confusion the activists, police, bystanders, and citizens from all around the world who'd arrived that day brimming with hope. By the day's end, they have all committed acts they never thought possible.

As heartbreaking as it is pulse-pounding, Yapa's virtuosic debut asks profound questions about the power of empathy in our hyper-connected modern world, and the limits of compassion, all while exploring how far we must go for family, for justice, and for love.

Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of January 2016: Coursing with energy, Sunil Yapa’s Your Heart is a Muscle the Size of a Fist is a rocket ship of a book, filled with heroics, violence and the propulsive action of a heart. Over the course of a day, Yapa spools a narrative of the now infamous World Trade Organization protests that took place along the streets of Seattle in 1990--a day that started peacefully and ended in blood. Yapa’s world introduces you to a kaleidoscope of characters and each is raw, real, driven by their own obligation and role in the protests—from the Chief of Police whose city it is to protect, to an ardent non-violent activist, to a delegate making his way to an important meeting in the hopes of transforming his country. This epic day unravels from every vantage point, and the result is a story empowered with exacting empathy. Your Heart is a Muscle the Size of a Fist is vivid, visceral, sly, and charged with action. You will race through it with a beating heart. --Al Woodworth

Review
"A fantastic debut novel.... What is so enthralling about this novel is its syncopated riff of empathy as the perspective jumps around these participants--some peaceful, some violent, some determined, some incredulous... Yapa creates a fluid sense of the riot as it washes over the city. Your Heart is a Muscle the Size of a Fist ultimately does for WTO protests what Norman Mailer's Armies of the Night did for the 1967 March on the Pentagon, gathering that confrontation in competing visions of what happened and what it meant."--Ron Charles, Washington Post

"A symphony of a novel. Sunil Yapa inhabits the skins of characters vastly different to himself: a riot cop in Seattle, a punk activist, a disillusioned world traveler and a high-level diplomat, among others. Through it all Yapa showcases a raw and rare talent. This is a protest novel which finds, at its core, a deep and abiding regard for the music of what happens. In the contemporary tradition of Aleksandar Hemon and Phillipp Meyer, with echoes of Michael Ondaatje and Arundhati Roy, Yapa strives forward with a literary molotov cocktail to light up the dark."--Colum McCann, author of the National Book Award winner Let the Great World Spin

"Your Heart is a Muscle the Size of a Fist is visceral, horrifying, and often heroic. But above all, this book is a full-throated chorus of voices on all sides--protestors, cops, delegates, politicians, and ramblers--as democracy runs headlong into the machinery of global power. Sunil Yapa has achieved something special, a story that is as tragic as it is relevant, as unflinching as it is humane."
―Smith Henderson, author of Fourth of July Creek

"Your Heart is a Muscle the Size of a Fist is a stunningly orchestrated, symphonic work of narrative power. This novel marshals all the vital forces of our existence--from the domestic to the political--and offers them to the reader with equal doses of compassion and beauty."―Dinaw Mengestu, author of All Our Names

"There is nothing to say about Sunil Yapa's debut novel that its wonderful title doesn't already promise--its heart beats and bleeds on every page, in prose so raw it feels built of muscle and tissue and sinew and sweat. This book is delightfully, forcefully alive, and I feel more alive for having read it."―Eleanor Henderson, author of Ten Thousand Saints

"An open-armed love letter to humanity, this glorious novel loops around a burning center encompassing the warmth of parents and the coolness of patriarchy. Your Heart is a Muscle the Size of a Fist will compel you to look and then to witness. 'We are mad with hope' the narrator says early on, and by the end the reader is too."―Tiphanie Yanique, author of Land of Love and Drowning

"Sunil Yapa's debut novel is possibly the most gorgeous book I've read in my entire life... Yapa's pattern of meandering, artful, full-bodied imagery, punctuated by zingy one-liners makes for a seriously addictive read... It's painful. It's gorgeous. I can't say this enough: read it."
―Bustle Magazine

"A vital, powerful read, Your Heart is a Muscle the Size of a Fist is an absorbing, multi-faceted, acutely hopeful novel."―Patrick deWitt, author of Undermajordomo Minor and The Sisters Brothers

"A great wrenching beautiful book."―Laline Paull, author of The Bees

"Chilling...A memorable, pulse-pounding literary experience."―Publisher's Weekly

"[A] gripping debut...Yapa is a skilled storyteller, revealing just enough about his characters and the direction of his plot to engage his readers, yet effectively building dramatic impact by withholding certain key details. In the style of Colum McCann's Let the Great World Spin, Yapa ties together seemingly disparate characters and narratives through a charged moment in history, showing how it still affects us all in different ways."―Booklist

"Yapa's writing is visceral and unsparing. Noteworthy, capital-I Important and a ripping read, his novel will be on many "best" lists in 2016."―Library Journal (starred review)

"In this beautifully written, kaleidoscopically shifting novel.... Yapa penetrates to the human connections and disconnections at play between the lines of history in the era of the global village."―Chicago Tribune

"Explosive."―Entertainment Weekly

"If you're looking for a novel that moves with heat this winter, look no further."―Flavorwire

"The energy and sheer humanity of Sunil Yapa's debut will grab you, wrap you in, and won't let you go-and that's just the start of why you're going to love this. Seven characters narrate this charged book, which centers on a protest. It's so layered, you'll finish this wondering how Yapa pulled off what he did."―Bustle

"It's not often that a novel takes a fraught event from the recent past, one that most of us only experienced in the flash of the cable news cycle or the static of print headlines, and imbues it with so much heart and soul that we do something we almost never do in the constant crush forward and faster-we pause and reconsider. That is the power of literature. Sunil Yapa's Your Heart is a Muscle the Size of a Fist does just this for the momentous protests of the 1999 World Trade Organization's (WTO).... Yapa does a heroic job of journeying into the heart of this complex set of events, illustrating how they grow out of and impact the character's lives. And while the heart may be the size of a fist, here it paradoxically seems to encompass the whole world and all of its citizens, who pulse with its every beat."―The Rumpus

"[A] gripping, profoundly humane first novel.... An absolutely compelling read."―Bookpage

"Yapa's novel is a much-needed and refreshing pivot point. His novel makes a case for the validity of all opinions in a conflict the better part of two decades old. This rare quality of his work is a practice that many could benefit from in current conflicts, foreign and domestic."
―Denver Post

"Sunil Yapa's voice and ambition leap off the page. Here is a writer to watch."
―Minneapolis Star Tribune

"This furiously paced and contrapuntal literary tour-de-force makes use of multiple vantage points and benefits from a remarkably empathic sensibility on the part of its author.... With Yapa burrowing into the hearts of these characters, each distinct yet sufferers all, his already weighty story attains a level of profundity."―Miami Herald

"Like magic, Yapa uses this handful of perspectives to create snapshots that allow the reader to imagine who else was there that day and what they were doing, thinking, and feeling...I can't imagine a better book to have kicked off my year in reading."―Bookriot

"Fast-paced and unflinching.... As these characters encounter one another in a fog of tear gas and pepper spray, Yapa vividly evokes rage and compassion. Underlying the novel, and at once reinforced and rejected, is the chief's mantra: "Care too much and the world will kill you cold."―Dallas Morning News

"Yapa's melding of fact and fiction, human frailty and geopolitics, is a genuine tour-de-force, and an exciting literary debut."―Seattle Times

"Fast-paced and unflinching.... As these characters encounter one another in a fog of tear gas and pepper spray, Yapa vividly evokes rage and compassion. Underlying the novel, and at once reinforced and rejected, is the chief's mantra: "Care too much and the world will kill you cold."―New Yorker

"A beautifully written book."―Entertainment Weekly

"An achingly compassionate fiction debut."―O Magazine

"As electric a novel as I've ever read."
―Benjamin Percy, Esquire

Beautiful and tragic, heart-wrenching but captivating
By Chris and Elizabeth Marrs
I had no idea I could hold my breath for so long, but I’m certain that I did not breath a single breath through the last 100 pages of this fantastically captivating book. It is an outstanding debut novel by an author to whom I will undoubtedly return. “Your Heart Is a Muscle the Size of a Fist” is powerful, raw, and certainly not for the faint of heart.

Based on a true events, we discover Victor, a young African-American who is desperate to skip town, heading down a path of destruction as he decides to sell marijuana in order to facilitate his escape from Seattle. This puts him at odds with the Police chief, who happens to be his own father. As the events of the book unravel, the reader will encounter terrible cruelty and humanity at its worst; but take heart, because there is also the severe contrast of kindness and compassion that forges its own stream through the heart of the novel.

This isn’t just the kind of book that you can’t put down. It’s the kind of book that changes hearts.

Intense and amazing
By Kelly
This is an absolutely stunning debut (which is also launching a new imprint at Hachette). It's based on true events, but somehow I had either never known or entirely forgotten about them (I am on the East Coast, granted, but I was 19 at the time, and I can't imagine it wasn't covered extensively).

But you don't need to know about them to enjoy this book.

Well, okay, "enjoy" might be a strong word. This is an incredibly intense book and there is a lot of suffering and a lot of people behaving badly. At the same time, there's such a strong current of humanity and kindness running through it---people risking their own safety to save others---that it gives and takes away my hope at the same time. (I know that doesn't really make sense.)

This is the kind of book that changes people.

Recommended.

Edgy, Dystopian, Melodramatic Lyricism
By Steven C. Hull
“Your Heart” is not only a debut novel for author Sunil Yapa but also for the new publishing imprint “Lee Boudreaux Books.” This particular novel is an unusual choice, both lyrical and edgy, to kick off the branding of a new imprint. The entire novel takes place in one day in the street in front of the Sheraton Hotel in Seattle, a hotel filled with delegates to the World Trade Organization waiting to be transported to the convention center a half mile away in 1999, and the ensuing violent clash between over 40,000 protesters and police that resulted in numerous injuries and 157 arrests.

During the course of the day, Yapa brings together seven characters: the white police chief and his runaway black step-son who joined the protesters, a Latina cop and a white redneck cop always trying to hit on her, two longtime professional activists who were past lovers, and a nave delegate from Sri Lanka. The police chief, initially seen as a modern marvel of compassion and common sense, turns brutal as the control tactics fail and the protest dissolves into extreme police brutality to clear the street for the transport of the delegates. Each character, first seen as stereotypical, is gradually revealed as far more complex or with dark pasts.

The protesters principally opposed the use of child labor in third world production for Americans addicted to cheap products, but the author also seemed to oppose any offshore manufacturing, as if undeveloped countries should remain pure and idealistic in their ancient manual labor, which also means ignoring their poverty, lack of clean water and high child death rates. The delegate from Sri Lanka describes the poverty in his country perpetuated by 3000-year-old backward methods of fishing and farming, hoping for loans from America to cover their impossible ever-growing monetary deficits, loans they can never repay.

Yapa draws a parallel of the protesters trying desperate methods to gain the world’s attention, risking police brutality, and the Sri Lankas wanting western investments in manufacturing that result in corruption and sweat-shop conditions: the only choice is slavery or suicide.

The characters remain stereotypical, and the prose is filled with lyrical, unending repetitions that mimic an amateur singer’s runs as if such runs raise the novel to literary art: sentences that run 22 lines and an examination of a character’s thought running to five pages. Instead, the style becomes melodramatic with unintended caricatures of rhetorical-style literary prose. At times the story seems a parody, a Fargo version of dystopia, or at best a failed Slaughterhouse Five.

Bonhoeffer for Armchair Theologians (Armchair Series), by Stephen R. Haynes, Lori Brandt Hale

This latest volume in the ever-popular WJK Armchair series turns its sights on contemporary theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906-1945). Born in Breslau, Germany, Bonhoeffer led quite an intriguing life. This book, with dozens of illustrations by artist Ron Hill, highlights Bonhoeffer's background and theological education; his time at Union Seminary in New York City; his involvement in the resistance movement against Adolf Hitler; and his participation in the plot to assassinate Hitler.

Written by experts but designed for the novice, the Armchair series provides accurate, concise, and witty overviews of some of the most profound moments and theologians in Christian history. These books are essential supplements for first-time encounters with primary texts, lucid refreshers for scholars and clergy, and enjoyable reads for the theologically curious.

Good Companion to Bonhoeffer Studies
By ebenezer
I used this book as an "add-on" to by studies in a course I took on the modern church. One of the subjects that was under discussion was Bonhoeffer himself.

I used the recommended text books as well as Bonhoeffer's "Cost of discipleship" and I threw in this little beauty to help my slow mind with some simple clarifications on Bonhoeffer's thoughts.

The book discusses "Costly Grace" in 14 pages (93-106) and it just seemed for me so much more understandable than what my lecturers tried to convey. It was worth it for just that chapter.

Also, the illustrations helped out. I must have a real simple mind because just seeing the illustration of a god hanging from a rope to describe what is meant by "Deus Ex Machina" (p.123) just did it for me. I have even taught the concept with the illustration in my mind.

Its a good buy for what it is, an incredibly helpful supplement to Bonhoeffer.

Nothing Better than Bonhoeffer
By Randall C. Mcgrady-beach
I really like this series of biogaphical books. It mixes in theology and historical data that helps me understand more fully the era and context of the individual. This volume on Bonhoeffer was not an exception. I am again amazed that just a profound thinker would put his ideals into action at the risk of his own life. He certainly challenges me, by his life, to live with sacrifice, suffering, and soul-searching. This is a great introduction to one of the most influential writers of today. The cost he paid is not less then the cost he challenges us to make. May we be ever so mindful and faithful as we live into our theology.

Careful - unless you have a deep, deep armchair
By DrPuttswell
"Written by experts but designed for the novice" is what the book says. We found that "novice" must have different meanings.
We used this book in my church adult education class. Adults of all ages and backgrounds read the book and many dropped out after the first two chapters There were frequent references to philosophers and philosophies that thoughtful and educated professionals had never encountered or encountered only in passing. I would not recommend it for use in a class setting unless the class is in seminary, or in a very large church with a select membership. After the biographical chapter the first half of the book was simply too difficult. Here from p. 83: "Bonhoeffer's understanding of this relationship between I and You, also known as intersubjectivity, differs from the transcendental philosophy and ontology of Kant; in fact, it transforms the understanding of the cognitive self as the starting point for defining the Other, which is a hallmark of transcendental thinking." If accountants and high school teachers, retired lab technicians and lawyers can cover a chapter filled with sentences like that - go for it and good luck.
