Best Resource for All Things InDesign CC

I've owned previous versions of Real World Adobe InDesign, and this version for InDesign CC again meets all my page layout needs from complex long to simple short documents.

Regarding Kendall L. Vaughan's review above, I think he should be sending his rant to Adobe, not to the authors of Real World Adobe InDesign CC.

InDesign CC and Education

I’m doing research in education about creativity with the use of digital media. The more I’m learning about InDesign CC, the more I’m becoming convinced that it has a very strong potential for becoming one of central platforms for teaching and learning in the future. Its interactivity allows a teacher to deliver material with presentations that are much more appealing to our day students. It facilitates the opportunity for a teacher to be an author of the content with the implementation of embedded images, videos and audio components. It enables students with the rights of becoming co-creators of the learning modules. They can add their own interactive features to the body of knowledge that the whole class generates. It makes learning so personal and fun. I wish there was more awareness among teachers about these fantastic possibilities of InDesign CC.
As I learn more about InDesign, I also learn about one of the authors of this book. Using this opportunity I would like to personally thank David Blatner for caring not only about InDesign but also about wide community of its users. When I needed help with my InDesign troubles, I contacted him and he answered and gave me very valuable advice. I listen to David Blatner video-teachings on Lynda's and enjoy them the most. He explains things like he knows and cares about the people who he is teaching. I asked him questions on InDesign Secrets and he really tried to help.

Even with all the InDesign information that's free online, I continue to rely on this book as a must-have manual. I know that it's accurate, and thanks to the book's organization, it often answers my questions more quickly than you can say "Google it."

Bad. Just really bad.

I bought both books at the same time based on the reviews. I will never do that again!!
These were some of the worst books I have read since getting my kindle a year ago and I've read over two hundred books. Not only was the editing horrible the H/h were horrible as well. One minute they are acting tough and cocky and the next they are acting weak and ridiculous, BOTH of them. There were times when it felt like the author was trying to fit every horrible cliche known to man kind in before it was over. The h was mouthy toward the Mafia! Yet for some reason she is allowed to get away with it..ok, not believable at all. The so called Mafia king goes around killing people in cold blood for years yet Bree is able to stop him by simply telling him how wrong it is. Just bad bad bad! I'm sorry, I'm sure the author worked really hard on this book but no fricking way does a "Mafia king" become an FBI agent!!! Nope not even in book world.

Excellent HEA for the relationship with Zerro. The cliffhanger from Indebted (A Kingpin Love Affair Book 1) was pretty scar. I loved the way that she turned the whole thing around. I really thought that she was in a bad place, but it pulled together really well in the end.

Give yourself the gift of this book.

As a five year, career-change teacher, I found myself rapidly approaching burnout. Worse, I was seeing it in teachers I deeply admired, both with more and less experience than me. I work in a high poverty school, and I could see the beginning of an exodus, from our building and our profession. This book has allowed me to breathe and regroup. I am hopeful in a way I haven't felt in quite a while. I've ordered two more copies for friends. Thank you Mr. Linsin, your book is truly a gift.

Will Michael Linsin save the teaching profession?

I just finished the powerful Smart Classroom Management and went right to Happy Teacher Habits. Both books are everything teaching programs and administrators fail to give new teachers: clear direction on maintaining control, putting the work in the students' hands and inspiring students with awesome lessons. Such an inexpensive investment in my teaching career! I see a review below about how to tackle "learned helplessness." Maybe Linsin's next book? I think he has a lot of books to write. I plan to re-read both books again before September.

Not a bad addition to your Lua repertoire

I recently got this book and read through it. Seeing there are no reviews here yet, I figured I better write one to give some an idea of what this book is about.

Note I'm no beginner to Lua.
Over the last five years I have written thousands of lines of Lua and have done pretty advanced interfacing to the Lua C API (for custom modules), added LuaJIT and other customizations, etc.
I really like the language; it's clean and simple, yet very versatile in it's details.

First, the book wasn't quite what I had expected.
I was hoping it was full of little tricks and techniques of that I didn't already know.
Although it's not in fact "Lua Snippets", it's "Lua programming Gems" after all..

A lot of it are what appears to be more of a case study for particular uses.
Where the authors after having worked out some particular large or difficult problem wrote up sort of a post mortem on what worked for them; on how they solved it et al.
Examples, there are articles on Lua for Game Programing, Lua versions of "Common Data structures" (STL C++ and C# types et al), and oddly even a Forth programming language in Lua, etc.
A lot of which I found a bit abstract in context that was a lot about the problem and perhaps less of Lua as a language.
Although all of which are great if something your looking for fits into one or more of these categories.
You might find a solution to your problem and have it worth the price of book many times over.

My favorite article is the one of the less abstract called "Lua Performance Tips" which you can read officially online free here:

In the end I'd say if you haven't read "Programming in Lua, Second Edition" or "Beginning Lua Programming (Programmer to Programmer)" yet (both here on Amazon) then read one or both of those first.
Then if you are an immediate Lua user, and, or, one or more of the Gems fit your needs (they should post the TOC here) then get this book too.

A plus is the book is edited by the Lua language authors them self's: Roberto Ierusalimschy (and the author of the "Lua Performance Tips" Gem in the book), Waldemar Celes, and Luiz Henrique de Figueiredo!

Decent tips and techniques

This book was a little different than what I expected, but still has lots of useful information that is helpful in understanding how Lua works, and how to become a better Lua programmer.

Coupled with the Lua on line documentation, example code, and "Programming in Lua" this book is a good addition to improving your Lua skills.

Not just for the K-1 crowd! Perfect for 8-11 year olds :)

I was hesitant to buy this for my 9 year-old 4th grader, because the bulk of the reviews talk about how great this series is for very young children. I'm a huge proponent of reading to kids, but anyone with an emerging-to-avid reader knows that if you don't keep their interest up with what's on the shelf, video games and tv will win the round. (At least they'll try!)

The lexile range for the Humphrey series is roughly 640-730... which translates to a 3rd-5th grade reading level, regardless of your child's chronological age. Can younger kids enjoy hearing the story? Of course. Can older kids get a kick out of it? For sure. I just want other people to know that this is a series geared toward the secondary set, 8-11 years old, despite a number of reviews that may have you saying "Wait a minute..."

This is a book that will keep your students and/or children asking for MORE!

I have read this book to students in my classroom (1st and 2nd grade students) as well as to my own children. Children love animal-perspective books. They love to WRITE stories from the perspective of a smaller creature- think: "The Littles" series. This book is funny, expands vocabulary, and at the back of the book, there are word searches for the students as well as focus questions for both teachers and parents. I underline words and phrases lightly in pencil for words and phrases students may not know and we will look them up later. For this book, both my classroom kids and my own kids looked up the different cages for hamsters and at the end of each chapter, there are tips for hamster care. I was surprised that the author hadn't owned a hamster prior to this as I have as a class pet (I've also had pet rats and mice as pets both at home and in the classroom). I prefer pet rats as they tend not to bite as a hamster would and are more hand-friendly. But, this is a great book filled with funny things to keep the attention of the students, plenty of opportunities for a parent or a teacher to branch out from whether it be writing, vocabulary, science, etc. I will use this book again and have used it again and again over the years when I was teaching as it was so loved by all students every year and now, by my own children.

Great for a 5 year old!

I bought this for my five year old son and he is in love! He is into chapter books but is still a bit young for many of the books out there. This is such a great blend of long form story telling and simple structure so he can follow along and still maintain focus and interest. I think the story may be a little simple for older kids but for his age, it's perfect! Although I do think he's about two chapters away from asking us for a pet hamster so...

Nice, useful and easy tech vocabulary.

This book is awesome, I teach technology in kindergarten and elementary and I found useful the explanations, and the content. However I'd like to recommend constantly updates (could be by online Scholastic webpage) and integrate teaching lessons and worksheets (you know, resources for teachers).

The book, Picking Up The Pieces is awesome!

I am to Chapter 8 now. It was so amazing to me the words I read with the instructions on what to do. It was exactly what I have been doing now since the divorce. It was legally final yesterday so I'm totally a free man now. As I was reading the book it was as if I could have written down everything I have been doing in my life now and we would have had two identical books. I know I have to be on the right track now!

Not the book I ordered

This isn't the book I ordered and I feel that it was sent to me intentionally because the book I did want was quite controversial. I've tried to contact Amazon and the seller about returning it to no avail-so I'll keep it but I'm not happy about the mix up at all.
