In that context, the profits obtained in the colonies thanks to price differentials between one region and another bring us back to the unending debate about the place of the economy in the ancient world and the pertinence of using features from modern economy - such as market, capital, private initiative, laws of supply and demand, and money - to explain the economies of the past.

Sally Huss writes delightful and entertaining children stories. But more importantly, they all are filled with essential life lessons parents want to instill in their children. "Kevin's Birthday Turtle" is another case in point. Sally bring the magical world of the sea and all its creatures to life in this story of a young boy and his sea turtle. As the boy learns, all creatures must be treated with care and compassion. Another important message for children taught in a perfectly charming way!

Good Story, Good Message

This book will set a child’s imagination going by following the little hero of this story as he travels beneath the sea. But it will also plant the seed of compassion for another, in this case, his turtle. I think this is a wonderful story that demonstrates how important a promise is. The idea here can be applied to any child’s caring of his own pet or even of himself. The many illustrations are charming, colorful, and move along beautifully with the rhythm of the story. Highly recommended.

Wow! What a Great Great Story

This is just the cutest story. A perfect under the sea adventure with a wonderful moral to the story. The illustrations are brilliant and the story is very well told. In this fun story your children will learn that pets need care, love and appreciation while your children are being thoroughly entertained as they're learning. Nice. Both my 2 yr. old and my 6 year old loved it! Absolutely recommended!

On a cold December day in 1866, Captain William J. Fetterman disobeyed orders and spurred his men across Lodge Trail Ridge in pursuit of a group of retreating Lakota Sioux, Arapahos, and Cheyennes. He saw a perfect opportunity to punish the tribes for harassing travelers on the Bozeman Trail and attacking wood trains sent out from nearby Fort Phil Kearny. In a sudden turn of events, his command was, within moments, annihilated. John D. McDermott’s masterful retelling of the Fetterman Disaster is just one episode of Red Cloud’s War, the most comprehensive history of the Bozeman Trail yet written.

In vivid detail, McDermott recounts how the discovery of gold in Montana in 1863 led to the opening of the 250-mile route from Fort Laramie to the goldfields near Virginia City, and the fortification of this route with three military posts. The road crossed the Powder River Basin, the last, best hunting grounds of the Northern Plains tribes. Oglala chief Red Cloud and his allies mounted a campaign of armed resistance against the army and Montana-bound settlers. Among a host of small but bloody clashes were such major battles as the Fetterman Disaster, the Wagon Box Fight, and the Hayfield Fight, all of them famous in the annals of the Indian Wars.

McDermott’s spellbinding narrative offers a cautionary tale of hubris and mis-calculation. The United States Army suffered one setback after another; what reputation for effectiveness it had gained during the Civil War dissipated in the skirmishing in faraway Big Horn country.

In a thoughtful conclusion, McDermott reflects on the tribes’ victories and the consequences of the Treaty of 1868. By successfully defending their hunting grounds, the Northern Plains tribes delayed an ultimate reckoning that would come a decade later on the Little Bighorn, on the Red Forks of the Powder River, at Slim Buttes, at Wolf Mountain, and in a dozen other places where warrior and trooper met in the final clashes on the western plains.

This Two Volume Set is the Best Yet on This Subject

I guess I'm not surprised to see nobody has yet reviewed this two volume set detailing the history of The Bozeman Trail. Yes, these books carry a $75.00 price tag, but if you are interested in America's western history I feel this set is the best yet to be written on the subject. The Bozeman Trail was designed to provide a shortcut to the goldfields in Virginia City, Montana. However, nobody told the Native Americans it was okay for this road to pass through the Powder River country with Fort Reno and Fort Phil Kearny in Wyoming and Fort C.F. Smith in Montana which were built to protect those traveling through.

When I think of the history of this ill-conceived idea I immediately think of three major battles that took place, namely the Fetterman Fight on December 21, 1866, near Fort Phil Kearny, the Hayfield Fight outside of Fort C.F. Smith in Montana on August 1, 1867, and the Wagon Box Fight which took place near Fort Phil Kearny on August 2, 1867. This two volume set delves into considerable detail regarding these three affairs in addition to practically every other minor skirmish during the two year period of its history. In this respect I am sometimes told more than I care to know about who was involved in each of these incidents on both sides.

In addition to Chief Red Cloud and numerous other Native Americans we are provided with the personalities of others such as Henry Carrington, William Fetterman, Jim Bridger, Frederick Brown, George Grummond, John "Portugee" Phillips, and others who spent time on these desolate outposts. A case has been made in a previous book in favor of William Judd Fetterman as to whether or not he disobeyed orders in pursuing the enemy beyond Lodge Trail Ridge. Author McDermott believes that Fetterman did, indeed, disobey orders.

Author John McDermott states the United States was ill-prepared to deal with their adversary on the western plains. This was an army that was underpaid, understaffed, and ill-equipped with appropriate weapons to take on an opponent they knew little or nothing about. The government didn't provide the necessary training or numbers of troops, or a strategy to win such a victory. History, he says, continues to repeat itself.

The Bozeman Trail, as you probably know, was closed in the year 1868 with the Fort Laramie Treaty in which Red Cloud is said to have won his war and the forts were eventually burned to the ground. However, author John McDermott makes the case that there were loopholes in the treaty that enabled the United States to eventually get the original inhabitants to exchange the buffalo for a cow, and a rifle for a hoe.

The book contains four sets of photographs along with a conclusion as to what happened to those that survived the time they spent on the hated post on the Little Piney. The text itself in the two volumes is 554 pages long in addition to a 72 page bibliography, and a 22 page index, and four sets of photographs. If you are interested in western history this two volume set is a well-researched addition to your library. Forget the price. These books are worth it.

Brutality and Blindness

Although, the campaign of 1876 is better known, it is the campaign on the Bozeman Trail a decade earlier that best illustrates the Indian brand of warfare: small raids, murder of the helpless and theft and all of the other minor actions that characterize guerrilla warfare and exist in the nether world between criminality and soldiering. The great strength of this book is in describing the guerrilla campaign waged by the Indians. The author also persuasively argues that the main cause of the army's failures were senior officers who demanded too much from soldiers who were poorly armed, poorly trained and too few in number to accomplish their mission. The author's treatment of the Fetterman Fight, the best known individual action in the campaign, is far less impressive. Mr. McDermott dismisses out of hand recent works questioning the Carrington line that Fetterman was responsible for the defeat because he was vainglorious and disobeyed orders. No matter how this argument is dressed up, it rests on the long-term effort of Carrington and his wives to protect Carrington's reputation by besmirching Fetterman. A far better treatment of the action can be found in J.W. Vaughn's vintage classic, Indian Fights. Overall, Mr. McDermott has produced a valuable, fresh, well-written and well researched account of the bloody events that occurred on the Bozeman Trail. It is only out of deference to Captain Fetterman that I have awarded 4 rather than 5 stars.

A great book for those interested in Ascension

Simple, to the point and powerful. The focus of the book is on spiritualizing the body through the practice of ascension attitudes of love, praise and gratitude. It also describes beautifully how and why these principles work. These three attitudes can begin to transform your life as soon as you begin applying them. They can change every area of your life - they have changed mine far beyond my expectations.

This little book can be read in one afternoon and/or for the rest of your life. I read it many times and will re-read it many more times. It is a treasure beyond words.

Wonderful little book

If you had read this book in the 60s (when it was written) it might not have made much sense. But today, after Autobiography of a Yogi and Conversations With God, this wonderful little book not only makes perfect sense, it gives you the urgency to find God, an urgency based on the confirmations of the previously mentioned books. Not only do you understand Jesus' message better, you also see through the misinterpretations. This is a book you want to keep on you to study at all times, until you can actually walk through the door of everything.

In with the in crowd

But how far in do you want to be?

If you ever had a fantasy of hanging out at The Factory for a day, reading this may make you wish instead you were trapped watching reruns of Monday Night Football for 24 hours.

Well, maybe it's not that bad. I was able to read attentively for 150 pages before I started browsing which became little more than page-turning for the last 100 pages. Perhaps I'll go back and see if it grows on me.

I guess you had to be there, but I'm glad I wasn't. It seemed like it was horrifically boring. Small talk rarely gets this small. Some mention of sex, some of drugs, some perverse humor hardly covers the emptiness.

"12 hours of Ondine ... a novel?" Not for me. If I had to pick, I've have featured the more coherent Sugar Plum Fairy (SPF, present in the 2nd half of the book) not Ondine. But unless I were doing a doctoral dissertation on Warhol's Factory,l I would have avoided "a". Now that I have it and want to make the best of it, there is, admittedly, something absorbing for a while in the rantings.

The glossary by Victor Bockris provides some help about who was who and what seemed particularly important. You can probably start in on any page without much loss.

Another such experiment by someone of taping with a different cast of characters would be welcome. Based on "a", there does seem to be a value in doing a "novel" in this way: a lot depends of who and when you tape. Like novels, "a"'s conversations seem contrived, just contrived by a lot more people than a single novelist and that could be good. I wouldn't want to read a day's worth of tapes of the Osmond Family or of the board of General Motors, but there's got to be a group whose taping would lead to a better "novel" than "a".

Consider reading "a" if you are curious enough about the Warhol scene or about what a novel by tape recorder would be like or are just feeling whacked out enough.

Sugar Plum Fairy: "Making silkscreens and photographs and, do you consider that work? I mean does he get up in the morning and say, 'Mom, I have to get down to the office...'"

A captures the peak year of the sixties experience.

A was written/recorded in 1965 when Andy Warhol first experimented with his new Norelco tape recorder. It wasn't until 1967/68 that the tape was actually transcribed, by Factory-ites working for minimum wage, one of whom was Moe Tucker, the drummer for the Velvet Underground. A was first published by Grove Press shortly after Warhol was shot on June 3, 1968. The original dustjacket is a giant red A -- Warhol turns Hawthorne's scarlet letter on its head. A is 24 hours in the life of the Factory denizens. A is Andy Warhol updating James Joyce' Ulysses. Whereas Joyce took 7 years to write about one 24 hour period, Warhol took just 24 hours. A includes all the gossip, pauses, stutters, and drug babble as one might expect. A just might be the only example of true "new journalism." Tape recorders don't lie. As a document of one typical day in 1965, the peak year of the great sixties decade, A is an unqualified success. Andy Warhol was at the vortex, watching/recording all from his silver throne. Warhol biographer Victor Bockris calls A "part of Warhol's great trilogy," the other two works being CHELSEA GIRLS, Warhol's 1966 3-1/2 hour film (it's actually 7 hours worth of film, since two reels are projected simultaneously) along with lp THE VELVET UNDERGROUND AND NICO, recorded in May, 1966. Get a copy of A now that it has been reissued. Start anywhere. Skip around. Read it your way. Just like the sixties.

A transcript, an artwork, not a novel. Great entertainment.

I first read this book when I was 18. Being enormously taken with it, I never returned my copy (an original hardback in paperback size with the big "A" on the front) to the university library. I ended up paying the library $272 in back dues before the university would release my diploma. It was worth every cent.
To create "A," Warhol followed and tape-recorded one Factory personality, Ondine, for 24 hours. Ondine was reportedly high on amphetamines at the time, so it was a full 24 hours involving no sleep. (Ondine was also a homosexual. He speaks graphically about homosexual sex often in "A" - that is why it was branded as pornographic in its day.) "A" is simply the transcription of those 24 hours worth of audio tape. Nothing more, nothing less. The women who were hired to transcribe the tapes reportedly got bored with their jobs and started typing the material in different layouts and formats. This formatting was left in the original book.
"A" is a collaborative work (Warhol, Ondine, Ondine's associates, the typists). It's pre-post-modern, if you will. And it is a splendid artifact from its time. It shouldn't be described or experienced in the context of literature and novels. It is an art piece, like any of Warhol's films. One does not compare the films "Empire State Building" or "Sleep" with "Sleepless in Seattle."
If you like being a fly on the wall, "A" will please you. It's like being there. Watch for references to the introduction of Pop Tarts and the release of the first James Bond flick. If you appreciate pop art and post-modernism, you'll get even more out of the book.
If you're a Warhol/Factory officianado (like me), it's great fun trying to decipher the real identities of the codenamed characters. Watch the film, "I Shot Andy Warhol" after reading "A." Much of the film's dialogue and situations could easily have been culled from the book.
"A" is quintessential Warhol: pop art as historical record / historical record as pop art.

About the Author

Thomas F. Banchoff is a geometer and a professor at Brown University. Dr. Banchoff was president of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) from 1999 to 2000. He has published numerous papers in a variety of journals and has been the recipient of many honors, including the MAA’s Deborah and Franklin Tepper Haimo Award and Brown’s Teaching with Technology Award. He is the author of several books, including Linear Algebra Through Geometry with John Wermer and Beyond the Third Dimension.

Stephen T. Lovett is an associate professor of mathematics at Wheaton College. Dr. Lovett has taught introductory courses on differential geometry for many years, including at Eastern Nazarene College. He has given many talks over the past several years on differential and algebraic geometry as well as cryptography. In 2015, he was awarded Wheaton’s Senior Scholarship Faculty Award. He is the author of Abstract Algebra: Structures and Applications and Differential Geometry of Manifolds.

Good alternative for Do Carmo.
This book is excellent readability. In addition, the book will have a description of the three-dimensional curves and surfaces other than manifolds instill a greater confidence in differential geometry to the reader.
