About the Author

Sonia Taneja, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor of Hindi at the Defense Language Institute. A member of the Hindi curriculum development team, she teaches Hindi classes to active U.S. service men and women. She was previously a lecturer in Hindi at Columbia University and a Hindi Regents Exam Writer for the NY City Department of Education.

Good Foundation for Beginners but one omission

This book is a gentle slope for those learning Hindi. As such, it gives the learner time to grasp the essence of the language and build a strong foundation on which to further progress. As many language learners know, compared to the major European languages and Japanese (and now Chinese), resources for many other languages are limited in both quality and quantity. The situation with Hindi is starting to change with the appearance of books such as this one and Delacy's Elementary Hindi, both of which teach Hindi in a systematic way with proper exercises and grammatical explanations. No doubt this book will provide a great foundation for intermediate Hindi study.

There is one problem with this book. I believe it is a significant problem. It doesn't negate the other good qualities of this book, which is why it still deserves 4 stars. Nonetheless, it is hard to use Hindi without knowledge of the normal past tense, as opposed to the past imperfect ("used to"). This book only talks about the past imperfect (I used to eat) and does not convey how to make a simple past sentence such as "I went." Now, this is related to a particle in Hindi that is often used with the past, "ne" which is probably one of the most difficult aspects of Hindi grammar for a beginner to grasp. However, it is not a nuance that can be delegated to a more advanced level since it is difficult to use any language without conjugating verbs in the past tense and this is simply the one aspect of Hindi grammar that one must slog through in order to grasp Hindi. Personally, I wish the past tense were included in this book, so that the habituation of students to it could begin, sooner rather than later.

Wonderful Suppliment to any Hindi Course

I am absolutely loving this book! I have been learning Hindi for almost five years and it has been the only language that I have truly taught myself. When I first started I was shocked at how little there was on such a big language! I basically used all of Rupert Snell's "Teach Yourself" Hindi series to learn it, but I am so glad that workbooks like this are starting to be made for Hindi. This book does a really good job in the first chapter witch teaching the Devanagari script, it even has a whole section on practicing conjuncts which I have not seen yet in any Hindi textbook. the book itself is easy to use and introduces things slowly, it doesn't bang you over the head with grammar or use too much unnecessary vocabulary. I also really enjoyed the little paragraph readings the author adds in at the end of some chapters, something I haven't seen a lot of in Hindi textbooks. Although this book is very good, I wouldn't use it as a standalone resource to learn Hindi, if you are teaching yourself you will need other Hindi textbooks to accompany this, and use this workbook as extra practice. If you are taking Hindi classes and learning from a teacher, I would recommend using this book as a supplement to go along with your class. The only one complaint I have with it is that some of the vocabulary is overly Sanskritic and many Hindi speakers would not use them in everyday speech, this however shouldn't be much of a problem is you are starting out in Hindi. Overall, this is a great book for Hindi learners!

A Useful Resource for Beginners

Sonia Taneja's Basic Hindi is a welcome addition to the Hindi resources for beginners. It provides comprehensible and step-by-step explanations with numerous practice exercises for learning Hindi script, sounds, basic grammar and vocabulary. Its presentation is user-friendly and the answer-key is helpful for self-learners. Both heritage and non-heritage learners can kick-start their study of Hindi language and culture with this book. An accompanying CD would have been very helpful for learning Hindi sounds and picking up native-like pronunciation of dialogues.

Tora! and Conan the Destroyer , but his delightful memoir is concerned less with his own accomplishments than with his encounters with "the moguls, monsters, superstars, greats, near-greats and ingrates of Hollywood." While admiring their individual talent, Fleischer is appalled by their sometimes infantile behavior. In a series of often hilarious anecdotes, he describes John Wayne's petty side, Kirk Douglas's ludicrous demands for attention, Robert Mitchum's methodical trashing of a set during a tantrum and Darryl Zanuck's very public infatuation with the French singer Juliette Greco. Other celebrated figures whose portraits are decidedly unflattering: Howard Hughes, Laurence Olivier, Orson Welles, Charles Bronson. Among those who escape unscathed: Irish playwright Brendan Behan, with whom the director spent a teetotaling but nontheless wild day in Dublin, and Edward G. Merry Memoirs by Hollywood director Fleischer, helmsman of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, The Boston Strangler, Fantastic Voyage, Doctor Doolittle, Mandingo, Compulsion, and 43 other films. Lighthearted takes on tough moments fill the standout pages of Fleischer's 77 years in the flicks. He was born (in 1916) to the movies, his father being the celebrated animator Max Fleischer, who gave film life to Betty Boop, Popeye, and many other memorable screen characters. Dad's great black beast in the industry was Walt Disney, who later offered the author the job of directing Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea--which Fleischer could accept only with his father's blessing. Among the many wonderful moments rendered here are the wrestling with the mechanical problems of Jules Verne's giant squid--as well as with Orson Welles in the full tide of his ego (he later apologized to Fleischer for his blowups). Quite moving is the death of Edward G. Robinson, who, at 80, filmed the last frames of his career--his marvelous death scene in Soylent Green--under the author's direction. Fleischer limns the immense ego of 20th Century-Fox studio head Darryl F. Zanuck, for whom he worked many times, who's shown with slimy cigar and brown-stained teeth, marching about giving orders. Kirk Douglas, star of the Verne vehicle, as well as of one of Fleischer's best films, The Vikings, also gets rapped (and forgiven) for rampant egoism, while Howard Hughes--then head of RKO--remains an idiotic perfectionist and yet has an adventurer's winning glow. John Wayne, Robert Mitchum, Rex Harrison, and Charlton Heston all have their moments center stage as well. Women--never great power-wielders in Fleischer's heyday--get little play here. Richard Fleischer was probably a director who rarely made a good film. Now I am not saying that he was a bad director but he either made a great film or a mediocre one, almost never anything in-between. However, in my opinion, one of his rare "good" films was the Robert Mitchum/Jane Russell vehicle His Kind of Woman. A middling fair overall but enjoyable but not nearly as enjoyable as reading the frustration Fleischer had to endure from Howard Hughes from this wonderful memoir "Just Tell Me When to Cry". What was simply suppose to be punching-up of the finale ended up being re-shoot of the film which took a year. These were just one of the many trials Fleischer had to go through during his long career and there are a long range of names here from the golden age of cinema; John Wayne, Kirk Douglas, Eddie G. Robinson, Orson Welles, and even legendary director Akira Kurosawa. Fleischer retells his conflicts he had with the actors he worked with a great deal of respect, he simply tells it like it is but usually ended the recollections on a good note; I think the only one he had nothing good to say about was Charles Bronson. Not everything is dirt though, the most touching chapter by far was the recollection of directing a frail and dying Edward G. Robinson in his final film, Soylent Green. If you don't get a little choked up after reading that story, you must be a robot. Overall, this quite a read for anyone who either has seen Fleischer's films or a major film buffs.

A Good Introduction to Nottingham

I bought this a a gift for a friend who has connections to Nottingham. It is a compact, well put together history of that very interesting city. If you are interested in the topic this book is a fine starting point. It provides a useful telling of the history of the city and is an engaging introduction to the place, without swamping the reader with footnotes and minutia. There is a good deal more to Nottingham than Robin Hood and those Merry Me. A good read.

About the Author
Morton I. Kamien (1938–2011) helped to build Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Business, where he served as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and directed the Heizer Center for Entrepreneurial Studies for nearly 20 years. Nancy L. Schwartz was the Morrison Professor of Decision Sciences, where in 1970 she was the Kellogg School's first woman faculty member appointed to an endowed chair. She chaired the Department of Managerial Economics and Decision Sciences and served as Director of the school's doctoral program until her death in 1981.

A nice reference book

This is a required book for my DO course in economics.

I should admit, however, that having a limited background in mathematics, I do not benefit from this book as much as A. Chiang's *Elements of Dynamic Optimization* and D. Leonard and N. Van Long's *Optimal Control Theory and Static Optimization in Economics* in terms of intuition building. Nevertheless, it is a very nice reference book, written in a clear and rigorous manner, and provides a number of classical and prototype examples.

One thing to mention is that the first part of the book on calculus of variation is not a must-read if the second part of optimal control is what you are interested in, but I would definitely recommend reading the entire book if your intuitions are solid enough.

Concise and well written

This is the best text for dynamic optimization theory in economics that I have used. Explanations are concise and examples are well thought out. Consider this as a supplement to any macro text or a standalone text for a dynamic optimization theory class. Does not really go into numerical solutions/programming.

The Lyric Self is Itself Lyrical

Dissapointing

I am more than half way through the book and am finding it difficult to continue. The author continues to list the steps of the development process, but with each step he fails to explain how to perform each step or give case examples of how it was done in a particular development. Instead he says "you can hire a professional to do this step if you like." If you do not know how to perform a function, and you hire a professional to perform it for you, a) how can you make any money? and b) how can you be sure that your professional is performing the function correctly? So far this book has been a major dissapointment.

A Must Read for Film Camera Enthusiasts

This is a great book for anyone interested in enhancing their knowledge about film photography. I'd recommend it for anyone interested in purchasing and using a film camera. Just as the title suggests, this book is about the camera itself. There's a useful chapter on lenses that will help you decide which type of lens to buy for your shooting needs. Plus there's a good chapter on image management: how to compose shots to create visually interesting photographs.

I've read all three books in this series, and while they do lean on the technical side I still consider them essential references for film camera enthusiasts.

I bought this book after taking a photo class at a local community college and was attempting to start on the trail of becoming a serious amateur photographer. This book was _exactly_ what I needed.
It explains all the details of all the modern cameras you are likely to find. Small, Medium and Large format cameras. Think a pinhole camera is the best? It isn't, and the plusses and minuses of pinhole cameras are discussed in this book. He covers all forms of shutters. Range finders. Dual-lens cameras. Everything. If you are looking for an understanding of different cameras and their pros & cons, this is the book to get.

Louisa "Lou" Holland is a civil engineer who has been training users of Civil 3D since 2006. She has worked extensively with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation and various consultants on Civil 3D implementations. Louisa is an Autodesk Approved Instructor (AAI), a Civil 3D Certified Professional, and a regular speaker at Autodesk University, Autodesk User Group International, and other industry events.

Mastering AutoCAD Civil 3D 2012

As an experienced user of Civil 3D, it is important to keep up with the yearly impovements to the interface. This book is a great reference to keep with you as you work. I would like to point out that experienced professionals, like myself, often buy these books in order to quickly brush-up on changes in the interface, or learn of newly added tools. While the text is a great resource, we aren't necessarily going to read it all. We mainly want to run through the exercises from front to back first, then delve into the text as needed. Unfortunately, the exercises in this edition tend to be buried in the text and are hard to find. It would be a valuable time-saver if all exercises were highlighted in some way, or better yet, numbered and included in an exercise index. The exercises are poorly marked and are broken up throughout the text so you have to read and read to find where the exercise continues. I don't have time for this. Just in the first two chapters alone, there are errors in exercise directions using incorrect survey quadrants that send you off in the wrong direction, references to exercises that don't exist, and exercises that callout incorrect units for radii and length. Sybex really needs someone to run though every exercise and ensure that they are correct and complete.

Excellent Read

First of all, I would like to say that this book is an excellent read. The language is friendly. The flow of subject matter is easy and logical. The content is thorough. It's obvious that the authors have had real-world experience with the software. Plus, there is humor! Now I wouldn't recommend it for poolside reading, but it would be an excellent reference to keep next to your computer at work.

The chapters are geared towards building insight. For example, you will have great insight regarding the functionality of parcels and where parcels can be applied in a Civil 3D project process instead of just learning how to create parcels. Also, the book is very well organized so that each chapter is purposed and focused. For instance, Superelevation could be addressed in several chapters: Alignments, Profiles & Profile Views, Assemblies & Subassemblies, and Corridors. Instead of spreading that information out over four chapters, there is one chapter dedicated to Superelevation.

Throughout sections of the book, there are tips and tricks which will help advance your developing skill with the software. There are also exercises spread throughout the chapters designed to fortify your learning. There are "Master It" tasks at the end of the chapters that will help drive certain concepts home. Then there are certification objectives flagged throughout the book that will help prepare you for the Autodesk Civil 3D certification exams.

Book=good Example file=bad

Book is well written and geared for the avid Civil 3d user. Information was clearly presented and the tutorials detailed in their step by step approach. The new information in the book was helpful for utilizing the new features in the software, especially the hydrology section in Chapter 14 and is definitely worth the read. I have found the previous versions of the book helpful and this version was proved the same. The only problem was the tutorial drawings and files did not perform as described in the book examples, specifically referring to the storm sewer analysis in Chapter 14. The Storm sewer file and the drawing file both errored out and was unable to continue with the exercise. In summary, get the book if you are interested in getting up to speed with the new version of Civil 3D (2012), while everyone else is still struggling with 2011.
