"This book is one of the first courses on electronic sound that explicitly integrates perception, theory, and practice using examples of real-time sound synthesis you can manipulate and experience for yourself. In my opinion, Cipriani and Giri have done a masterful job of allowing experiential and theoretical knowledge to reinforce each other. This book will work either as a textbook or as a vehicle for the independent learner. As a bonus, the book includes a thorough introduction to digital signal processing with Max/MSP and serves as a wonderful introduction to the programming concepts in that software. I hope you will take advantage of the excellent Max/MSP examples the authors have created. They are simultaneously fun and enlightening, and they sound good enough to use on stage. They are also worth examining as models for your own Max/MSP patches, or for extending in new ways. As you will see, the theoretical chapters are the "T" chapters, while practical and experiential knowledge is imparted by the "P" chapters. These chapters alternate, in the form of a ladder, refining the concepts at ever higher levels of sophistication. I want to wish you good luck on this new adventure, and also thank my two Italian friends for creating such a comprehensive resource for learning about digital music - the one I wish existed when I was a student!"
(from the Foreword by David Zicarelli, publisher of Max/MSP).
This is the first of a series of three volumes dedicated to digital synthesis and sound design. It is ideal for those who are newcomers to the field, but it will also prove to be an indispensable resource for those who wish to deepen existing skills in sound design, in electronic music, or in Max/MSP.
About the Author
ALESSANDRO CIPRIANI co-authored "Virtual Sound", a textbook on Csound programming, and was a co-creator of the first online course on sound synthesis available in Europe. His electroacoustic and multimedia compositions have been performed at major festivals and electronic music venues (such as Synthèse Bourges, Venice Biennale and the International Computer Music Conference), and released on CDs and DVDs issued by Computer Music Journal, ICMC, CNI, Everglade, as well as others. He is a tenured professor in electronic music at the Conservatory of Frosinone, a founding member of Edison Studio in Rome, and a member of the editorial board of the journal Organised Sound (published by Cambridge University Press). He has given seminars at many European and American universities, including the University of California - Santa Barbara, Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, and Accademia di S. Cecilia in Rome.
MAURIZIO GIRI is a professor of composition as well as a teacher of Max/MSP programming techniques at the conservatories of Rome and Frosinone. He is an instrumental, electroacoustic and multimedia composer of music, specializing in digital sound and video processing and computer-assisted composition. He has written computer applications for algorithmic composition and live performance, and has published numerous tutorials on MaxMSP. He was artist in residence at the Cité Internationale des Artes in Paris, and at GRAME in Lyon. He is also an associate member of the Nicod Institute at the Ècole Normale Supérieur in Paris, where he is currently collaborating with other faculty members on a textbook on the philosophy of sound, entitled "Knowledge of Sound".

Finally a Max/MSP and Digital Synthesis textbook.
By F. DeSena
This book by Cipriani and Giri really fills the bill on a number of counts. First it is a methodical exposition of programming with Max and MSP, suitable for use as a textbook in a second-level music technology course. But even more than that, it is a text which covers the principles and practice of digital synthesis. These are precisely the two major components of my Electronic Music II course at New World School of the Arts in Miami.
This is a book I have longed for, both in my current position, and my previous one as director of the Electronic Music Studio at the University of Miami. I dare say there are many music technology teachers who will welcome this particular conceptual pairing, and therefore consider its adoption as a course text.
The writing is clear and the theoretical concepts are given a sound and methodical, yet practical exposition. This is not the book for a rigorous mathematical presentation of acoustics and signal processing, for that purpose there are other texts. It is, however, a broadly useful and accessible textbook guide to digital synthesis and processing using the software platform that has become the standard in the field of electronic music programming.
If you teach electronic music with Max/MSP or just want to learn about it, you should check out this book.

One of the few Max/MSP books available, and it's darn GOOD!
By zhiwan
I've been studying Max/MSP for the past year using the tutorials that came with the program. I got by fine using this method, combined with the cycling74 forums. Now I am quite comfortable with Max and Jitter. However, I never quite got the hang of the MSP tutorials. I'm not exactly musically inclined, and I felt like I was trudging through no man's land learning MSP this way.
Someone recommended me this book, and I must say, it was one of the best buys I've ever made. The book is well paced, divided into theory, followed by related exercises, and finishes with Max/MSP basics for the beginners. Rinse and repeat. The book may be a bit intense for those with absolutely no knowledge of Max/MSP, but for someone who really sucks at music, Electronic Music and Sound Design proved invaluable. Music terms are clearly defined. Extra max patches and listening activities are added on their website that work seamlessly with each chapter. But my greatest praise comes from the overall clarity found throughout the text. Most books I've read concerning software instructions are vague. Often, I am confused by which layer (Adobe products) the author is referring to, or how to get to a certain filter or menu item without having to Google it up. But Cipriani and Giri never gave me that problem when I followed their instructions. And it never felt pedantic. One small minor wish for the authors: please add solutions to the exercises. I would like to see how certain problems were solved. With Max, there's so many ways to do things that looking at someone else's work can be so instructive.
If you are serious about learning this amazing program, at some point, you must give this book a try.

Great -- though make sure you get the edition which is for your version of Max (5 vs. 6)

This book's unusual format is truly helpful and enjoyable. They alternate explanations with hands-on sections, helping you more deeply understand the new material than would happen otherwise.
