Excellent Colonial America Social History...

A first-rate social history of the five leading cities in the American colonies. I first read this book c. 1971 for a weekend history course I was taking at Univ. of Nebraska at Omaha. I still have the paperback textbook, and will read it again someday. Truly, a classic work.

This is a great book. No, it isn't new or flashy, but it is an intelligent, well written, very useful account of the rise of cities of colonial America. If you want to understand the beginnings of urban life in the thirteen colonies, this is the book to read first.

Pellon's translation marks a clear improvement over the previous English versions of this seminal novel. Pellon captures the crisp, tense, and terse dialogue of Azuela's original, and I believe that his decision to leave some words in Spanish is a good one, given that most of the words involved are already well known to the non-Spanish speaking public. The retention of these Spanish words adds flavor to the translation without turning it into a 'Taco Bell' version of the novel. I am so enthusiastic about Pellon's translation that I believe it should become the standard edition of Los de Abajo read in America. . . In short, this new translation is worthy of the classic on which it is based. Gustavo Pellon has produced a flowing, readable new translation of Mariano Azuela's Los de Abajo that avoids the sometimes stilted English of the still popular 1929 translation by Enrique Mungia. Not only is Professor Pellon's English more readable but the translation is made smoother by his decision to leave certain difficult-to-translate words in the original Mexican Spanish. For those who cannot grasp the meaning of these words from the context, a glossary is provided at the end of the book. In addition to the new translation Professor Pellon has provided an important service to those who will use this novel in college classes by including an appendix that outlines the most important events of the Mexican revolution, discusses the novel in historical context, and explains Azuela's particular literary contributions. Finally Pellon attempts to come to grips with Azuela's views of the revolution. Also extremely welcome are the selections from John Reed's and Anita Brenner's writings on Mexico from approximately the same period. In short, this volume provides an integrated analysis of a novel that, while always said to be revelatory of the nature of the revolution, is generally not adequately contextualized. . . . This edition of Los de Abajo is a most welcome addition to the available literature for undergraduate teaching of the history of Mexico as well as Mexican and Latin American literature. This book is an excellent timepiece about a specific part of the Mexican revolution. The translation is very good and the additional texts help to place the time and situation to the reader in a simple manner.

Will the Revolution accomplish anything?

Translator Gustavo Pell�n writes that THE UNDERDOGS is "universally hailed as the most important novel of the Mexican Revolution and a foundational work of modern Mexican and Latin American literature". Thus, there are good reasons for students of certain nooks of history and literature to read it. But it also is a decent novel and reading it was rewarding for a generalist such as myself.

The novel follows one band of revolutionaries, led by Demetrio Mac�as (a full-blooded Indian) over a two-year time span (1913 to 1915). They are local, with local grievances. Local "caciques" call in the Federales to exterminate them, but Mac�as and his men prevail. With success, Mac�as attracts many new followers, his army swells, and he becomes entangled in the more national "Revolution". Living off the land, he and his men take to drinking, whoring, looting, and murdering -- oppressing the campesinos they encounter much like they had been oppressed by the caciques. They defeat the Federales, but the guerilla warfare continues, now among the different factions of revolutionaries (or, different warlords). At one point, one of Mac�as's key lieutenants blurts out, "But what I really can't get through my head is how come we gotta keep on fighting. . . . Didn't we lick the Federales?" THE UNDERDOGS (the Spanish title "Los de abajo" literally means "the ones below", or those on the lowest rung of the socioeconomic ladder) poses the question, Will the Revolution accomplish anything?

That question is phrased prospectively rather than retrospectively (i.e., "DID the Revolution accomplish anything?") because Mariano Azuela actually wrote the novel during the Revolution, based in large part on his own experiences serving as a field doctor with the army of Juli�n Medina, one of Pancho Villa's supporters. Azuela eventually withdrew from the revolutionary whirlwind to El Paso, where he wrote and published THE UNDERDOGS in 1915.

For a novel from 1915, THE UNDERDOGS is remarkably modern. It also is quite realistic. Neither the peasants nor the revolutionaries are airbrushed or mythologized. The novel is profane and raunchy at times. It proceeds at near breakneck speed. There are some rough edges to the writing, and on occasion the dialogue is not convincing, especially when one of the characters launches into a hortatory or political speech. But the novel is good enough from a literary perspective to be more than an historical or regional curiosity.

There are at least two other English translations of THE UNDERDOGS currently in print, including one by Carlos Fuentes published by Penguin Classics. My guess is that the novel is assigned reading in many college courses and that the publishers are competing for sales to that captive audience. I can't offer an opinion as to which translation -- Pell�n (Hackett Publishing) or Fuentes (Penguin) -- is better. Points in favor of this Hackett Publishing edition are that it includes an excellent afterword on the historical and literary context of the novel, a useful chronology and map, as well as fifty pages of "related texts" (two book reviews and excerpts from John Reed's "Insurgent Mexico" and Anita Brenner's "Idols behind Altars"). Plus, as of the posting of this review, this Hackett Publishing edition is a little cheaper than the Penguin Classics one.

I order this book and obtained it in no time. The story was a good read the the glossary in the back helped with understanding some if the terms used. This was an interesting read and an interesting look into the Mexican Revolution.

All martial arts change with three inches of steel.

Dan Inosanto has been one of the best teachers and proponents of the martial arts.His resume need not be repeated.In this book he explains and teaches the fighting system of his homeland.Unless a system realistically addresses weapons, sadly few do, it cannot call itself a complete martial art.For non ballistic( firearms) weapons, Kali has stood the test of time.Amongst my most prized books is a signed copy I received from Dan Inosanto attained at a seminar.His teaching ability is legendary and at your fingertips with this book or anything he does.

The text itself is martial arts history

If you have read Bruce Lee's "Tao of Jeet Kune Do" and respect his philosophy, you will love this book from his foremost student, GM Dan Inosanto.

Though there are many with higher credentials than myself, my sons and I have trained in Bandalan Doce Pares Eskrima under Master Antonio Lucero for over five years,so my experience of reading this book was perhaps very different from that of someone untrained in Eskrima/Kali/Arnis. Our grandmaster goes back with GM Inosanto, so perhaps it is not so suprising that I loved this book. It has much in the way of philosophy, history, and the structure of armed and unarmed techniques in this book that is invaluable. The stories of true Grandmasters, warrior legends, and veterans of dozens of fights to the death like Angel Cabales, Regino Ellustrisimo,Leo Giron, John Lacoste, and Floro Villabrille are amazing, as it is the tried and proven combat reality of FMA that makes it a unique and beautiful art.

There are many parts of the book that I enjoyed, but I found these passages under the heading of "Weapon Characteristics" to be a very important summation of why Kali/Eskrima/Arnis is such an important and deadly martial art.

"Escrimadors claim the ability to pick up any hand-wielded weapon, regarless of its shape, and use it effectively. To someone unfamiliar with Escrima principles, that sounds presumptuous, but consider the pattern of angles [covered earlier in the book and similar in all Escrima styles] again. There's only so many ways to hit an opponent.

If you're already familiar with one or more weapons, all the better. Swing the weapon, jab the weapon, hit anything with the weapon and see if you don't use some form of that pattern. The angles....of Escrima and Kali are 'principles. They have nothing to do with styles or faction.'

Instead of thinking of a weapon as belonging to the Chinese or the Japanese or the Filipinos or any particular martial art, instead of thinking of a weapon by its exotic name, look at the weapon, look at the weapon. The performance of a weapon is affected by its characteristics, not by its origin or its name." (128)

There are also many photographs and captions illustrating the efficacy of empty hand Eskrima/Kali and the way in which there is a unity between weapons-based and empty hand combat styles. The ideas on solo training and environmental training are very good as well (fighting in a doorway to defend your home, from behind a wall, etc.).

Loved this book growing up!

This book shows the old grandmasters of escrima at the time, 1970s-80s. It is a prime introductory guide to show the non-informed martial arts enthusiasts/students/fans the history of the eskrimadors. Many of the Stockton GMs are shown and they explain their art and share some stories of their past. I loved this book and really hope that amazon can acquire the Kindle digital version asap. There were times growing up and reading the pages of this great book over and over again.

This is the book you need to start heat treating. (Ignore the childish reviews.)

Anyone who enjoys metalworking and is searching for introductory information on heat treating will find this book is a thing of beauty. To quote the preface, "This is not a book about metallurgy, but a book that describes in simple terms what happens to metal during heat treatment!" Right from the start ("Chapter 1. What is Steel" and "Chapter 2. Exactly What is Heat Treatment Doing?") the author explains step-by-step how to treat the major classes and most common alloys of tool steel. If you want to know the how and why of hardening, tempering and annealing at a level that will allow you to really do it yourself, look no further.

The book decodes the naming conventions, explains the differences between air, water and oil steels, offers insight into the effects of various alloys and provides full recipes for hardening, quenching and tempering the most used steels. He goes on to discuss the effects of subsequent operations such as grinding, welding and EDM. The back is filled with tables with data for all the steels you're ever likely to use.

I had tried a few projects prior to finding this book with mixed results, mostly because it's impossible to tell "straw" from "pale amber" without going through an old-fashioned apprenticeship. This book offers exact instructions, temperatures, soak schedules and tips that produce excellent results.

On finding the link to recommend this book to a friend, I was shocked to find that it had such a low reader rating (3/5 stars). Of the six other reviews here, three are the arrogant sarcasm of people who have so much free time that they read about other people's vacations. Regarding the fourth, if you are as well versed in 16th century texts on metallurgy as in the "cutting edge" of technology, then this book is not for you either.

Very good for the model building airbrushing techniques

Great book. I recommend it as a a complement to "The Basics of Scale Modeling (also from FineScale Modeler Books)" on the more detail topic airbrushing.
But please be aware that I only recommend this one or "Painting and Finishing" (from FineScale Modeler Books).
I've bought the two and 50% of the contents/projects are shared between both.

Very Basic

This is a good book, if it weren't for the directions that come with any airbrush kit. Nothing new, so save a few bucks and move on to the master modeler books with many more tips on how to use the airbrush more effectively...or simply use the trial and error method...

What an educational and enlightening book that is more like a reference book than a simple informative guide. The author is obviously incredibly insightful, knowledgeable, and writes in a descriptive way that is straight to the point. I really leaned so many things I didn’t know, such as whether or not E-cigarettes are as harmful as regular cigarettes, or how to successfully quit smoking with suffering setbacks or relapses. You never really know what you are going to get when you buy any type of "how-to" or "inside secrets" themed book, but this time I have to give the author very high marks. I found this book packed full of common sense and actual useful information, with no BS, and a little sarcastic humor. If you, or someone you know is thinking about quitting smoking, then do yourself or them a favor and get this book! 5 big stars!

Very useful information.

The author Jerey Palarca does a wonderful job making the argument for smokers to quit smoking using the e-cig and vaping method. I grew up in a house full of smokers in the 80’s. Seeing the damaging effects of smoking first hand was enough to make me not want to start ever. Unfortunately my stepchildren picked up the habit. They've brought home e-cigs only because it’s the new trend out there. Vapor shops are popping up all over the place. I never really knew the actual benefits of vaping until reading the book Stop Smoking Cigarettes: Make the Transition into E-Cigarettes and Vaping. This book is extremely informative and has a lot of ammunition I can use with my stepdaughters to make the case to stop smoking.

You don't get enough satisfaction out of ecigs, plus their expensive, they taste terrible and look silly .Vaping on the other hand is much more gratifying.All kinds of different flavors, nicotine levels vary from 0mg to 36mg (e juice ). Vaporizers are very affordable starting at $25 to $100 depending on your budget. Personally I started vaping 2 weeks ago and have been cigarette free for the last 5 days, so the transition was pretty easy and I've been a pack a day smoker for the last 32 years.......Great book , Great advice Thanks Jeremy
