But as should be expected of any Klassen animal in close proximity to headgear, it becomes obvious that one of the tortoises still very much covets the hat. As in his previous works, Klassen takes a minimalist approach, with an economy of words and simple, textured shapes. The repetition of certain phrases and the organization of the title into three parts make this entry flow like an easy reader. Full-page compositions showcase the bare desert landscape, with soft gradients of muted orange as the sole bit of color in the gray and black palette. Fans of the previous "Hat" books who follow the subtle clues and motivations will likely suspect an ironic ending. In a charming turn, the conflict is resolved through empathy and the bonds of friendship—Klassen's animals have clearly evolved in their thinking since the bear in I Want My Hat Back and the fish in This Is Not My Hat. The lightest touch of the surreal adds to the dreamy melancholy of this tale. About the Author
Jon Klassen is the author-illustrator of I Want My Hat Back, a Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor Book, and This Is Not My Hat, winner of the Caldecott Medal. He is the illustrator of two Caldecott Honor books, including Sam and Dave Dig a Hole and Extra Yarn, both written by Mac Barnett, as well as House Held Up by Trees, written by Ted Kooser. Originally from Niagara Falls, Ontario, Jon Klassen now lives in Los Angeles.

Just Right

First off, I adore Jon Klassen's work, esp. I Want My Hat Back (which, if somehow you don't have it, go buy it, right now). We Found a Hat is so very gentle and so very sweet and so really unlike I Want My Hat Back and This is Not My Hat, both of which have a kind of edge to them. Two tortoises, obviously very old and close friends, find a hat -- only one hat. They leave it, as it would only cause friction between them, but it's amazing how Klassen manages to infuse covetousness in one of two identical tortoises just by manipulating its eyes. There is no violence (not even implied off-screen) and in the end no betrayal, only an affirmation of the bond of friendship. The story and the book are both very beautiful and if this completes Klassen's "Hat Trilogy," it ends just right.

Fun Creative Stories

Loved this book so much; I purchased the other two "hat" books. My granddaughter is three and loved the stories as well. This one in particular has a story which is a little more fitting to a three year old. The other two books are fantastic and funny, but the endings are better suited to 5 year olds and up. Would recommend absolutely and no second thoughts about my purchase of these fabulously written books.

Have Kleenex at hand...

It isn't often a writer/illustrator comes along like Klassen. He is in the same class as Steig, Sendak and Virginia Lee Burton. I have an unfettered love and appreciation for his words and illustrations. As such, I knew this book would be great. I didn't think it could exceed my expectations, but it did. Whether it was a tightly kept secret or I simply missed the memo, it came as a surprise to me We Found A Hat is a story of friendship. It is the best in his 'Hat series,' which is truly saying something. Buy it and read it aloud to the ones you love best.

Marilyn Cruise has done it again in her sequel White Chapel. I absolutely adored this novel and found myself turning the pages eagerly wanting more. I cannot wait for her the last book in the series to be released! Cruise effectively continues the story of a stripper and a billionaire who wishes to marry her for an inheritance. This novel is crazy passionate and had me not knowing my feelings toward the two as a couple. My opinions were changing and developing with every turn in the story. There is only three things you need to accomplish tonight: read this novel, indulge in the seductive world Cruise has created, and dream of a handsome billionaire.

I can't get enough of this book that had me crying and laughing all the way to ordering the 3rd book, my advise get all three at once. This book continues with Michael and Scarletts plan to decieve his mother Diane, who is as vicious as she is sweet. She definitely sees right threw both of then up to and including her final message to Scarlett. When Michael finally realizes he truly loves her, will it be too late, has all the lies and mistrust really the end? This book will capture your heart so you can't help but go onto book three.

MICHAEL A. LIEBERMAN, PhD, is Professor in the Graduate School in Electrical Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. He has published more than 170 journal articles on the topics of plasmas, plasma processing, and nonlinear dynamics. He has also coauthored, with Professor Lichtenberg, Regular and Stochastic Motion and Regular and Chaotic Dynamics, Second Edition.

ALLAN J. LICHTENBERG, PhD, is Professor in the Graduate School in Electrical Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. A respected pioneer in the fields of high-temperature plasmas, plasma discharges, and nonlinear dynamics, he has published about 150 articles in these areas. In addition to the books coauthored with Professor Lieberman, he has written an earlier monograph Phase-Space Dynamics of Particles (Wiley).

and it is better to me for understanding the material

Correlates with Lippincott's Illustrate Reviews Biochemistry very tightly. I used Lippincott's as a mini-textbook (supplemented school's syllabus), and it is better to me for understanding the material, but BRS is far more conducive for review, with its high-yield outline format and more USMLE-like questions. The questions are excellent, ULMLE-type, and include additional online questions. Clinical correlates are nearly the same in each review book, although cursory in both (better covered in First AId Cases) - I looked up each disease mentioned while studying for class in a pathology text (Robbins or Rubin's) to better understand the manifestations/dx/tx. There are a few errors in BRS (iron response element regulatory mechanism, etc.). I don't know how Rapid Review Biochemistry compares.

Very concise book covering molecular biology and genetics

If you want a more thorough yet concise enough review book for medical Biochemistry, go for LIR.
If you want one with broad coverage of molecular biology and genetics and does not want to purchase a textbook for the topic, go for BRS Review.
This book is more on genetics and molecular biology. I like the point-form arrangement of the book which makes reading easier. Moreover, there are abundant multiple choice exercises behind each chapter with answers, facilitating students' learning of the subject.
This book is not very thick, but I'm sure it'll be quite useful.

A better way to invest

I have been following Gary's work for almost 3 years now while researching several trading systems. He has been very helpful responding to all my questions and I've learned a great deal from him. It was especially nice to read about Gary's interesting finance career in this book. His network, experience & education made him the right person to discuss the wide range of topics & history he covered.

As the name suggests, this book is about Momentum Investing: the idea that markets with strong relative strength continue outperforming in the short-term while weak markets continue to underperform. The author makes a very compelling case for why momentum is the "premier" anomaly for outperforming the broad market indices.

He does this with a logical flow of ideas that are backed with a great deal of research every step along the way. The book starts by building a foundation with history and finance concepts, then explores all the various funds and alternative strategies out there before discussing what momentum is in detail. By looking at the alternatives, the reader appreciates why momentum stands out.

The author has an excellent writing style. Finance books can get very dull, but Gary's humor and storytelling made the book enjoyable to read. Here is a summary of what I took from this book:

In Chapter 1, Gary acknowledges that indexing beats the average investor since it is more diversified, disciplined and lower cost. This helps supports the idea that markets are efficient. However, while it's hard to beat indexing it's not impossible. You just need a systematic approach (to remove your emotions) that's been thoroughly tested and minimizes costs. Chapter 2 shows this with a historical tour of traders that successfully used momentum to generate excess return for over a century.

Chapters 3-4 discussed concepts from Modern Finance in detail, which can be tough to follow if you don't have a finance background. I really enjoyed the discussion of Behavorial Finance in chapter 4. Investors' emotions cause them to buy and sell at the wrong times and are largely what cause markets to be inefficient. Anomalies like momentum should persist as long as humans have emotions.

Chapters 5-6 discussed the investment landscape. It was shown that stocks have been the best performing asset class (especially US equities) followed by bonds. Gary then discussed other vehicles such as mutual funds, hedge funds and alternative strategies such as "smart beta." It was shown how these vehicles have (on average) underperformed market indices. The number of vehicles and strategies out there today is mind blowing. These 2 chapters can save readers years of frustration.

Chapters 8-10 discussed the Dual Momentum strategy. Gary explained in detail what absolute vs. relative momentum is, how using both enhances his strategy and all the variations to his method that he explored. Backtest results for all permutations were presented in clear, organized tables & charts.

In 1993, Parfitt, a professor of Jewish studies in London, published Journey to the Vanished City, a fascinating look at the Lemba people of South Africa, who believed they were descended from Jews. In the intervening years, through use of DNA, the Lemba’s claim was proven correct. Here, Parfitt, a real-life Indiana Jones, details another quest, his attempt to solve the mystery of the Ark of the Covenant, a Jewish artifact said to have contained the Ten Commandments. Parfitt’s narrative fits the Indiana Jones label; it’s thoroughly cinematic in tone, with scenes of heartstopping action and featuring characters so quirky they feel more fictional than real. (With no notes, and the disclaimer that names and personal details have been changed, who can say for sure?) But the book also has strong scholarly underpinnings that explain the mystical nature of the Ark, its possible uses, and why and how it could still exist. About the Author

Tudor Parfitt's life's work has been tracking down the lost tribes of Israel in Africa and Asia. As professor of Jewish studies at London's prestigious School of Oriental and African Studies and Fellow of the Oxford Centre of Hebrew and Jewish Studies, he has written widely on the history of the Jews of Africa and Asia. In 2006, he was appointed Distinguished Visiting Fellow at Harvard University. He has traveled widely through remote areas of Africa and Asia and divides his time between London and the Templar region of the South Aveyron.

Disappointing Adventure

The Lost Ark of the Covenant was an interesting account of Tudor Parfitt's search for what he considers is the lost Ark of the Covenant. For the most part, Mr. Parfitts account was written in an engaging and witty manner. His conclusions, though interesting, left a lot to be desired. The ending was a bit disappointing and unsatisfying.

If you are looking for the resting place of the traditional Ark of the Covenant then you won't find it here. On the other hand, if you find the oral traditions surrounding the Ark worthy of further investigation then you will enjoy the author's decades of research into this intriguing subject.

For a scholar, it was dissapointing. I wanted to know where the Ark went, not all the places the author drank whisky or the clever ways he could insult people. He brought up interesting facts, but didn't contact them well.
