Joshua Prager is the author of The Echoing Green, which was a Washington Post Best Book of the Year, and Half-Life, which The Economist called “an impressive work of self-scrutiny.” He writes for publications including Vanity Fair and the New York Times. Milton Glaser is among the most celebrated graphic designers in the United States. In 2009, Mr. Glaser received the National Medal of the Arts from President Obama. He lives with his wife in New York City.

About the Author
Arthur Taylor has drummed with Coleman Hawkins, Bud Powell, Sonny Rollins, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, and dozens of others. He has been called ”one of the great drummers to come out of the fertile Harlem bebop scene” (New York Times) and ”one of the best bandleaders living or dead” (Village Voice). His band, Taylor’s Wailers, has recorded several albums, and is based in New York City.

A classic for the mind, body and spirit

Arthur Taylor, a most creative source of a force in the drumming world, has created a moving, startling, and lovely group of interviews of some of the most influential artists in jazz (Black Classical) music. Giants like; Thelonious Monk, Erroll Garner, Elvin Jones, Nina Simone, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie and so many others paint images of pointedness, beauty, intellect and feeling. The reader really gets an insight into the personalities and lives of these wonderful people that are the lineage of the only true American art form. I really recomend the book to anyone, from the person who has had one passing thought about jazz artists to those who dedicate their life to the art form, or any artform. This is, as they say, the real deal. I am humbled by Mr. Taylor's wonderful work and, in my own way, feel love for each of the unique artists that he interviews. Thank You Arthur!

Priceless view into the lives and minds of these artists

Notes and Tones is distinct in its highly synergistic dialogue. The fact that Arthur Taylor was a serious [Black] jazz drummer, with a familiar professional and personal relationship with many of the interviewees, resulted in wide ranging discussions marked by unguarded sincerity. Certain themes are touched upon numerous times [the Black Power movement & the need for jazz musicians to unite and practice cooperative economics], which while perhaps dating the book, nevertheless provide a telling contrast to the current state of affairs in the music world in general, and the social concerns of the U.S. Black community specifically. This clearly was a labor of love, and the insights shared by these iconic figures consistently inspire me to make the most of my time and efforts in whatever I'm pursuing, every time I read from the book.

The author is an experienced teacher who gives sound advice, and seems to take a good, common-sense approach. Incidentally, the book is nicely laid out: an easy-to-read font, and easy-to-hold size. The paper is good quality, and it isn't so glaringly-white that you stop reading with a mild headache. The radical break of artists with Abstract Expressionism at the end of the 1950s demonstrates the traditional modernist view of the solitary, suffering artist did not seduce those who came of age in the burgeoning American economy of the 1960s. Might just be THE book for your Spouse/Significant Other

This book begins at a party to which the author is wearing his new red velvet dress. One of the other partygoers, a woman, asks him why he crossdresses. He is again reminded just how complicated the answer to that question is and decides to write this book as a response. However, he doesn't just try to explain why he crossdresses, he also tries to explain why other people do too---including people whose reasons are often completely different from his own. In doing so, he organizes his answer in a way that sheds light on all of the myriad manifestations of crossdressing. He readily admits that it might be impossible to explain crossdressing, but he organizes his thoughts on the subject in a way which assumes that it can be explained---so that is why this book just might be the perfect "introductory course" on crossdressing for your spouse/SO! And it might also help you to organize or fine tune your own thinking, especially if you read it together (highly recommended!). Somewhere in here I should mention that I refer to the author with masculine pronouns because that is his preference; he does not consider himself to be female---feminine yes, female no. That's actually the subject of a chapter in the book.
Okay, the author offers nine reasons why men crossdress. His approach surely oversimplifies, and the author allows that his nine reasons might not cover every single individual, but this is probably exactly the sort of "answer" your spouse/SO needs when she asks, "Okay, but why?" It tells her "why" you do, but perhaps more importantly to her, it also tells her that many of the reasons other men crossdress AREN'T the reasons you crossdress. This will be especially so if you read the book TOGETHER. Hold that thought.
Once he's identified the nine reasons men crossdress, the author then identifies 13 types of crossdressers. Again, his list might not be inclusive, and he admits that some people will change "type" at different times in their lives and some people will be more than one "type" at the same time, But, again, this is almost certainly the sort of "answer" your spouse/SO wants and needs. Is it perfect? Probably not, but who knows? Either way, the "types" follow very logically from the "reasons" so, again, this format WILL help her understand. And that alone makes it a book worth sharing.
So, if I think it's such a wonderful book for your spouse/SO, and for you too, then why do I only rate it a four? Two reasons. The author has a very quirky, prickly sense of humor which I think is simply marvelous. Not everyone will agree, because crossdressers are as likely to be the object of his humor as his subject. I'm okay with that. Most books about men in dresses are too damn solemn for my taste. As the author says: if crossdressing isn't fun, what's the point? But if you disagree, you are hereby forewarned! Second, in the final chapter of the book the author tries to conclusively explain why he (and, by implication, many other men) crossdress, I get lost in the Freudian miasma. Besides the fact that I found his reasoning hard to follow (which could my problem), I also consider Freud debunked as a Fraud. He may offer the occassional interesting insight, but I can't think of one and anybody who comes up with "gender is destiny" and "penis envy" is clearly confused and possibly deranged. Hence my "4" rating. But---this is still a wonderful book, and I emphatically recommend it to your spouse/SO!

Informative and thought provoking

Having been a cd for close to 30 years, I found that the book had some wonderful insights. I am clearly a cosmetic CD, quite content to visit my feminine side when the stresses of my male world need relaxtion. J.J. Allen does an excellent job in explaining the distinctions between us "girls". I highly recommend the chapter on the "Black Lace Prison" for it's insight on the potential downside. Important reading for those seeking to understand.

Unfortunately I did not realize that this book was intended primarily for the general public. While fairly informative and easy to read, It doesn't add much to the need for people to understand the motivations behind crossdressing, never mind help people come to terms with it and accept it as a "normal" behavior for mainstream society.

Brilliant Translation and Introduction

Oxford World Classics have been my choice in Russian literature for many years now. These works typically provide excellent introductions and translations of the great Russian literary masters of the 19th century. This book is no exception. Compared to other versions of these stories, I find this book combines the formality of Russian literary style with the simplicity of a casual reader; it captures the mood of the story and relates it quite well to the reader. I would highly recommend this and other Oxford World Classics works.

The Wanderers

The collection of Tolstoy's short fiction, The Devil and Other Stories, contains some of his finest work. Take but one example, the story "Father Sergy". Tolstoy takes the story of one man, and his spiritual quest, and makes it a type of microcosm for the entire human encounter with the divine, and by extension, humanity.

In Father Sergy's quest, from dashing young officer to Russian Orthodox monk and priest, Tolstoy shows both the benefits and limits of organized religion. Of course, human nature meddles in his efforts as well. His difficulty overcoming pride, and especially lust, dogs him into his sixties. As a famous hermit with the power to heal, he succumbs to the charms of a sick woman. Dogged by his sin, he then becomes an unknown wanderer, moving from place to place, begging for food, having no possessions.

It is obvious that Tolstoy had great sympathy for this type of religious life, as many of his characters who struggle with religious questions end up as wanderers. Positive characters with pearls of wisdom to deliver are usually wanderers as well. No doubt he saw in this life a recapitulation of the life of Jesus and his early followers.

In his fiction, all these ideas interact with one another creating a lively and varied account of all that people are capable of; Tolstoy is not to be messed with. In terms of literature, he is one of the big boys, and every writer should read him, and then read him again.

Brilliant short stories from a Master of Russian Literature

These are wonderful short stories by Leo Tolstoy, one of the greatest writers to have come from Russia. Every story on this collection deals with Tolstoy's real-life observations and experiences. Each contains issures that are either social, religious, philsophical, or (in only a few occasions) political. For example, "The Devil" deals with the consequences of sexuality, while "Strider: The Story of a Horse" tells of both animal cruelty and flaws of the social class. "Lucerne" and "Diary of a Madman" consist of journal entries by people who deal with the real world.

All in all, I would recommend these short stories to all Tolstoy fans, and fans of Russian Literature in general. Grade: A

This book gives all the basics that every guy (or girl from that matter) should know, plus a little bit more. The author goes into changing a flat, jacking up your vehicle, checking fuses, warning lights, and more. Anyone who has a car and wants to know the 101 will enjoy this book and contents of it. EXCELLENT CAR MAINTENANCE GUIDE

If your looking to save money on car maintenance and car repairs then this is a good book to read. It provides a lot of great tips and information on when to complete oil changes and tune-ups and even how to troubleshoot car problems on your own. For someone who doesn't know much about cars such as myself, this was an excellent read.

The Gold Standard on American Realism Painting

Edward Lucie-Smith's inimitable style of writing endears him to his readers who might just be buying art books for the pictures - the ubiquitous coffeetable book. His approach to his subject (and his catalogue of published books on art is staggering in scope) is always 'Art first, Opinion second', which is another way of saying that he lets the work describe itself in the sensitive way in which he constructs his books.
AMERICAN REALISM is as much a sociological study of the American progress as it is a matrix to etch images that accompany that historical trek. In his fine introduction he sets the tone for the journey, then addresses early American art and begins his intensive presentation with the works of Thomas Eakins and Winslow Homer. Subsequent chapters find new insights into American Still Life, the Impressists in America (Cassatt, Sargent, Chase, Hassam), then proceeds on through the Ashcan School, Regionalism (one of the most creative chapters), through the Urban and Social Realism of the likes of Hopper, Marsh, Soyer and Shahn. Here his style of writing diverges as he addresses the Revolution in American Art, or, what has America made that is uniquely her own. Of great interest here is his emphasis on painters such as Paul Cadmus, Philip Guston, Jared French, George Tooker, Andrew Wyeth, bringing to their works a sensitivity rarely written prior to this book. After Abstraction he once again returns to representational art and brings to life Fairfield Porter, Neil Welliver, Jane Freilicher, Larry Rivers, Richard Diebenkorn,Wayne Thiebaud, Chuck Close, John Nava, Alice Neel, Gregory Gillespie, Martha Mayer Erlebacher, Eric Fischl, Leon Golub, and yes, even Jeff Koons.
The sparkling and informative dialogue of this book is enhanced by superb reproductions of paintings in both color and black and white. This book is somewhat dated now, having been published in 1994 and newly released in paperback. One hopes that Lucie-Smith will write a sequel to this volume and bring the public up to date with the many artists who belong in this company, artists - like Wes Hempel, Gerard Huber, Michael Workman, Wade Reynolds, James Doolin, Willaim Fogg, Robert Peterson, Daniel Sprick..........and of course countless others. A 'must have' for any solid library.

A much broader topic than one would have suspected

One of the myths of "realism" is that it is somehow less challenging than non-representational art. This terrific book takes on the broad sweep of American Realism from the Civil War through 1990. The book is full of wonderful images from so many different styles that the reader can begin to see that what is called realistic or representational has its own symbolic language and is full of its own abstractions and distortions of trying to represent aspects of our four dimensional world on a two dimensional surface.

The book is full of paintings of all types and styles within this broad topic. There are also photographs of related sculpture and even photographs that are themselves the work of art. The images contained in the book range from the sublime, to the odd and strange, through the raunchy and vulgar.

The text is lively, insightful, and adds a great deal to the reader's understanding of the images included.
