Gary Chapman, PhD, is the author of the New York Times bestselling The Five Love Languages. Great CD!!! Definitely recommend purchasing it!!!

This cd has really opened my eyes and I've learned alot about myself from listening to it. What might be a sincere apology to you, might not be seen the same way by another person. What I love is that it actually gives you examples on how to express yourself when your words are not getting through after you've hurt someone. It also shows you how to respond when you are the person that is being hurt by a person's actions or words.

Great info for all in relationships

This audio book was great. There were a few things that did not apply or that I disagreed with, but over all, there was some very valuable information in the book. I would recommend this for anyone who is in a relationship, along with his other books the five languages of love. These two together will make it easier to remain in a strong relationship.

About the Author
Allen E. Ivey is Distinguished University Professor (emeritus) at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. A Diplomate in counseling psychology, Dr. Ivey is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, American Counseling Association, and Asian-American Psychological Association. His work in diversity led him to be honored as a Multicultural Elder at the National Multicultural Conference and Summit. He has written more than 40 books and 200 articles and chapters, translated into 20 languages. Dr. Ivey's undergraduate work was in psychology at Stanford University, followed by a Fulbright Grant to study social work at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. His doctorate is from Harvard University. He is the originator of the Microskills approach, basic to this book.

Mary Bradford Ivey is Senior Consultant at Microtraining/Alexander Street Press and a former Vice President of Microtraining Associates. She has served as visiting professor at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst; the University of Hawai'i, Manoa; and Flinders University, South Australia. She is a retired elementary counselor and a former Stress Management counselor at Amherst College. Her comprehensive elementary program was named one of the top ten in the nation at the Christa McAuliffe Conference. Dr. Ivey earned a master's degree in counseling from the University of Wisconsin, and a doctorate in organizational development at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She is the author or co-author of twenty books (translated into multiple languages), as well as several articles and chapters. A Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC), she has presented workshops and keynote lectures with Dr. Allen Ivey throughout the world. She is also known for her work in promoting and explaining development guidance and counseling in the United States and abroad. She is one of the first fifteen honored Fellows of the American Counseling Association and is also a recipient of the American Counseling Association's Ohana Award for her work in multicultural counseling.

Carlos P. Zalaquett is a Professor in the Department of Educational Psychology, Counseling, and Special Education at The Pennsylvania State University, and a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in the State of Florida. He is also the Vice-President for the United States and Canada of the Society of Interamerican Psychology and Past-President of the Florida Mental Health Counseling Association, the Suncoast Mental Health Counselors Association (SMHCA), and the Florida Behavioral Health Alliance. Dr. Zalaquett is an internationally recognized expert on mental health, counseling, psychotherapy, diversity, and education and has conducted workshops and lectures in eleven countries. He is the author or co-author of more than 50 scholarly publications and five books, including the Spanish version of BASIC ATTENDING SKILLS. He has received many awards, such as the USF Latinos Association's Faculty of the Year, the Tampa Hispanic Heritage's Man of Education Award, and the SMHCA Emeritus Award. His current research uses a neuroscience-based framework to compare brain activity and self-reported decision making. This cutting edge research integrates mind, brain, and body in the exploration of human responses central to counseling and psychotherapy.

Disappointing

The Kindle version of this book is not supported by iPad and iPhone's voiceover due to digital rights permissions. I personally find this to be discriminatory and counterproductive for anyone who specifically purchases an ebook for the voice over capabilities. Anyone who listens to their books to gain better comprehension will be disappointed by this title. The blind and dyslexic students who require certain aid in reading will be disappointed, as legal restrictions prevent the e-text conversion by text to speech technology. This is unfortunately not limited to kindle versions, but all e-text versions of this title, as the permissions are denied. The only reason I purchase ebooks is for the assistive text to speech capabilities built in to my ipad. The best feature of ebooks (In my opinion) are rendered useless by money grubbing, paranoid, control freaks, who limit academic freedom in the name of anti-piracy.

Don't bother with the Kindle edition of this book!

This is a good book, but the Kindle version is almost worthless. The case studies and tables are in very small print that will not enlarge. These are critical components of this book that you will need a magnifying glass to read on the Kindle. All other text in the book will enlarge, but not these portions.

Annette is starting to think she is a freak. For some reason the only
thing that turns her on these days is the thought of a strong man
taking her and bending her to do what he wants, and not what she
wants. After pursuing the Internet and books she winds up running
into Mr. Paul, an alleged Dominant and trainer who lives in a southern
state. After lots of interaction and a few trials over the miles
Annette decides to take her vacation at Mr. Paul's to see if BDSM is
what she really wants for a lifestyle or just for a weekend fantasy.

When Annette "Honey" spends time at Mr. Paul's she finds that this is
what she has always wanted. Though she is sure that she wants a Dom
that is not cruel or abusive but one that will take her to the limits
and not hurt her. While being trained she also meets Master James who
sees in her the Submissive he has always wanted in his life. Master
James is willing to take her on, and even purchase her if she decides
to put her submissiveness up for auction.

Honey decides this is the lifestyle for her and relocates to the south
and finishes her training. She is still torn with the feelings for
Master Paul and Maters James but is willing to let fate take its
course. Will one of them want her enough to pursue her?

My Pet is one hot BDSM book with an actual storyline and plot. I was
drawn into the story and followed along as Annette "Honey" learned
about what she really desired, and how willing she was to go to get
what she desired. I felt that the story was well written and more
than a little steamy. If you like some heavy BDSM in your stories
than My Pet is a must for your reading pleasure.

I was disappointed with My Pet. My objection isn't with the "degrading" of women. For me, it is hard to say they were truly degraded when they have made the choice to become and stay a slave. They have the ability to say stop at anytime. They get off on the feeling.

My objections come in several other parts. SPOILER? Master Paul puts Honey in several potentially dangerous situations that could have very easily led her to being raped. Honey knows Master Paul only by talking to him via internet and phone, he doesn't live in the same state as her. The first time when he has her shave herself, go to a bar, and pick a man to bare herself to...need I say more? SPOILER I stopped reading the book at the point where Master James has Honey assume one of her normal. She has a thought that this position is like being raped - almost. My thought was heck no! How could the thought of rape even enter her mind. This was a position she's been in numerous times, she can stop everything at once and she is turned on by everything that is happening - she even says she can't wait for him to.... This is NOTHING like rape and it seemed to me as if the author had to throw this thought in for controversy.

All the parts that I read had some kind of aspect of what I wrote above. I would not recommend this book to anyone.

Like Dilbert cartoons there is a healthy dose of reality in this tale

I am pretty sure I have worked with people similar to the Slow Horses and their bosses -- the author must have drawn the characters from his life experiences as the aura of authenticity is too good to be straight fiction.
The description of daily activities & inner workings in the 'new' type of intelligence service is just too accurate to be a figment of imagination.
The manner in which one becomes a Slow Horse can be many and varied and the grouping of a team of misfits and error prone former agents slowly winding up damaged careers in Slough Jackson under the slovenly but oh-so street-smart Jackson Lamb. This is so neatly portrayed and how, when the dire events occur, even Slow Horses can rise to the occasion with creditable results.
Attention Mick Herron : I need more of this Jackson Lamb so get to it !!

Strongly recommend this spy novel

Looking for an adrenaline-fueled, action-packed thrill ride hosted by an invincible super spy with a fabulously wealthy former beauty queen as his paramour (albeit with two PhD's and a perfect shot, of course!) and the Pope, President and Prime Minister on speed dial? Mick Herron's Slow Horses won't deliver any of that.

What Slow Horses will deliver is a character-driven spy novel in the vein of John LeCarre without the preachiness. Herron's Slow Horses have 'been there, done that', but each were thrust off the fast track and into the Slough House before any of them were ready to quietly fade away. They are all stuck in this dead end for different reasons, or as Somerset Maugham might say of them - the essence of their beauty is their unity of variety. While neither redemption nor reconsideration are offered, over the course of the story we come to care about these fully developed characters. And I'll leave it at that with a strong recommendation to buy and read and enjoy this spy novel.

Starts slow, but keep reading.

Took a while to get going. It gets much better towards the middle of the book. The first half is pretty much all character development, the plot takes off in the second half. The slow horses appear at first to just be group of screw ups and misfits in British intelligence, but there are deeper things in play that aren't immediately apparent. If you find the characters interesting, keep reading.

This book has always been popular with the techy-geeky crowd, but, since it was first published in the '70s, it missed out on the cyberpunk revolution of the '80s. It's too bad, because this is a compelling story of a future world tied together by a universal data network, a world that could be our tomorrow. It's a tense place filled with information overload and corporate domination, and nearly everything is known about everybody. Except Nickie Haflinger, a prodigy whose talents allow him to switch identities with a phone call. Nickie plans to change the world, if only he can keep from getting caught.

About the Author
John Brunner (1934-1995) published his first novel pseudonymously at the age of 17, and through the 1950s and early 1960s wrote many science fiction adventure novels. His work grew more ambitious in the late 1960s; "Stand on Zanzibar", a Hugo Award-winner, is generally regarded as his greatest achievement.

One of the 5 I'd take on a desert island

The title comes from Alvin Toffler's "FutureShock." In the best of his books (Stand on Zanzibar, The Sheep Look Up, and Shockwave Rider), Brunner takes one problematic element of modern society and extrapolates into the future. In Stand on Zanzibar it is population pressure; in The Sheep Look Up it is environmental pollution; in Shockwave Rider it is the increasing rate of change and its effect on us. (BTW, the rest of his books are very different; and he's written some of the most depressing SF I've ever read; it might have been therapy for him but his "Total Eclipse" might send me into it!)

The increasing rate of change has sent most Americans into mental distress. The most obvious cause (i.e. the most identifiable thing with an increasing rate of change) is the internet (Brunner doesn't call it that, but he has it right nonetheless) -- everything one does is subject to scrutiny by the Feds and by anyone who can hack the net. The flip side is that oneself is rarely able to find out important information. In other words: there are those around one who know things they shouldn't, are improperly profiting from it, and one can't do anything about it. The protagonist is a goverment-trained programmer who becomes hacker extraordinaire.

The structure of the book takes getting used to, but is also the reason its a desert island book. Shockwave Rider is arranged in short sections, the shortest only a paragraph, the longest rarely more than a few pages. The scene jumps around and there seems to be no continuity. Stick with it! It will become clear soon enough, and it worth plowing on till it does. One hint: one type of section is commentary, not plot. Each section has a heading -- a quote or a reference. I would spend my time on my hypothetical desert island reading this book; but most importantly tracking down the references and discovering the relevance of the heading and commentary to the plot.

Writing about Shockwave Rider makes me want to reread it; I think I'll do that now.

Grand-daddy of all cyberpunk

I remember buying all Brunner novels I could find as he wrote them back in the 20th C. His were among the few science fiction novels that were in the book racks at the grocery, back in the late 70's and early 80's. I guess I was about 14 or so when I got my little paws on this one. I was enticed and excited, much as I was by other sci-fi novels back then, but it was only when I began reading Gibson and Walter John many years later that I began to recall ... dated, of course, and Brunner's characters are all very much 1950-70's type characters, very neurotic and uptight. (People are not so much like that any more, of course ;-). They are now just whacked, or stupid.)

And it is amusing to see Brunner's future world where everybody logs into a massive mainframe for the entire continent. It's amusing to think maybe we could have gone that route technologically; a central monolithic network instead of a zillion anarchistic distributed networks. Then perhaps Windows would be the "good guys" and Nix would be the "Evil Empire!"

In this techno-dystopian novel, it seems the wrong people have been given root privileges. And although the word "hacker" had not been invented yet, our protagonist is indeed an anti-social computer whiz/underachiever, who devises a virus that ... well, enough spoiling for today. Read teh book!

And if you enjoyed this, consider looking at the "Future Shock" trilogy by Alvin Toffler, a major inspiration to Brunner, both intellectually and stylistically, and Brunner's "The Sheep Look Up," his other greatest novel -- one of very many, as Brunner was very prolific.

I demand a reprint

Little is to be added to the other reviews. This 28-year old book not only decribed the internet as it will become very soon long before its inception, but computer viruses (called "worms" by Brunner) before the first PC too, plus a few other things and issues not even mentioned yet.
Since a friend gave it to me to read many years ago, I've bought every copy of it I could find. I have kept one German and one English version and as I will not let them out of my bookshelf under no circumstances I gave all others away as gifts, still looking for more copies to give away.
It has been sold out so often and for such a long time, each time and in each of those two languages available to me, that if one were to be a follower of conspiracy theories, well, the fact that this book is not reprinted as often as some other books of Brunner are would be reason for suspicion.
