WARRIORS OF THE GALAXY
Book One: In Quest of Destiny
A science fiction adventure novel.
Tyron is a young Zen Master who grew up in a remote Buddhist monastery on the planet Dador after being left there as a child by a battleship captain. The monk who adopted him taught him Bushido sword fighting alongside Zen Buddhism and made sure he became an ace spitlaser (single-man fighter crafts armed with laser cannons) pilot with the intention of preparing him to fulfill his destiny. The young Zen Master lived an ascetic life devoted to physical and mental discipline to conquer "Maya" in the quest for Nirvana and Enlightenment.
On his deathbed, the old Master explained to Tyron that his success as a sword fighter was in part due to the fact that he was an Exotic (a person with powers of extrasensory perception). He gave Tyron his inheritance that was left with him as a child: a katana and an Arcturian jewel that enhanced ESP.
Tyron set out on a space liner accompanied by his friend, Sumo, after the death of the old Master and immediately landed into trouble. His space liner was attacked and captured by the pirate El Capitan. The young Zen Master had a choice: become a pirate or a slave; he opted for piracy. This set into motion a series of adventures in the hedonistic galaxy as he fought space battles and dueled with his antimatter sword for survival while falling in love with extraordinary women who were bent on changing his ascetic way of life.
In the mean time in other parts of the galaxy, Emperor Dracon, an Exotic with telepathic powers, schemed and conquered planets with his dreaded army of Husects created by the genetic fusion of humans and insects. Ultimately, Tyron was drawn into confrontation with him as he went to the rescue of the fiery and passionate Devi, the crown princess of planet Jalandar and the youngest ever Fleet Admiral.

A delightful find

I read the paperback version of this book last summer when a friend told me about a promising new author. I am not a regular reader of science fiction, but I do enjoy a good story. This was an excellent example of both. With clear inspiration from south asian spirituality and writing styles. If you like a good story that mixes science fiction, and religion, ie star wars or the Dune Series than you will probably like this book, actually you will probably like it better because this was much funnier than anything Herbert has ever written. I can't wait for the sequel.
