a wonderful work

De Beauvoir's novel Les Belle Images is a wonderful work of fiction which simultaneously exposes and works to subvert mainstream social ideologies. It is representative both of her philosophical leanings toward existentialism as well as her commitment to feminism and of a new social role for women. The characters in the novel are passive, having accepted as necessary the roles society has decided for them. They are shallow, interested only in how they are being perceived by others. With the exception of Laurence (the main character), all the characters are complacent, content with living according to the goals and expectations of mainstream bourgeoisie society. Laurence struggles against this lack of morality, and is discontented by the passive role of woman that she has been forced to submit to.

Going beneath all the beautiful images

You are surrounded by beautiful images! Beautiful, accomplished people who are wholly concerned about maintaining their wonderful appearance to society. Beautiful cars to parade yourself in town. Beautiful food to grace your fabulous parties. Be sure you don't behave irrationally--you don't want to embarrass yourself, your family, and, heaven forbid, become the talk of the town.

Meet Laurence, a woman of means who begins to reflect and struggle with the status of her own life because of the innocent questions posed by her young daughter: "Why do people live" and "Why are some people unhappy".

Laurence would like to unclutter her life by changing her actions and thinking, as well as those around her. She comes to see her material life as devoid of meaning: sterile and colorless. It is difficult for her to express her opinions, especially to her arrogant spouse, who constantly feels the need to be right in any discussion.

Unfortunately, she is constrained by the bourgeoisie society she lives in, by their mentality and expectations of how people ought to behave. Everyone around her seems complacent in their existing roles, but not Laurence. She wants more than the status quo and is determined that her daughters be able to breathe: to be themselves and have fun in life, rather than follow the dictates of how proper young girls should behave.

Beauvoir slips back and forth between third person and first person, which I find confusing at first, but as with her previous novels, they always get better as I read on. I enjoyed this novel, even though I did not like some of the characters!

Ah, french existentialism...

I liked this book a lot, and it was fun to see how well the literature related back into the title. The book explored a lot of "beautiful images" which when further inspected are rather empty and unexceptional. I guess in a nutshell this book is about a woman in the upper class of French society who, because of innocent questions from her daughter, has somewhat of a mid-life crisis. She comes to realize that her and her family's wealth has made their lives devoid of pleasure and individuality. Of course, there's other great stuff in the book, but I leave that to you to find out. P.S. This book is in French - make sure you can read it!

About the Author
Earl R. Babbie graduated from Harvard University before enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, and began teaching shortly thereafter. Practice of Social -ism Research

Earl Babbie is eloquent in his writing style, and lends good clarity to specific topics. However, his obsession with religion, politics, and homosexuality tend to distract from the quality of the presentation. There is hardly a chapter where he hasn't inserted a pitch on his pet topics, and he even appears to spend much of Chapter 13 venting about the Bible and homosexuality. The text book seems partly a demonstration of his self-righteous social/intellectual "superiority". He could have offered a clean and simple conveyance of research methods, with benign examples and without the innuendo. Maybe in the next edition?

I Heard The Owl Call My Name

When I first received this book, I thought that it would be one of those tedious books that you have to write reviews on while in school. While reading the first chapter, I confirmed that thought for myself, and left the book for a week or so. The first chapter, to me, was this quite confusing chapter which had no real beginning or end, and no real meaning. When I finally had to read the book to start writing my review, I struggled through the first chapter again. And then I came to the second. What a breath of fresh air it was, and from then onwards, the book flowed as the rivers and streams that it describes.
The story is one that is very true to the world today - it talks about a culture that is slowly being lost to technology. It is a very touching story, about love, loss, friendship, trust....in fact it is about every conceivable human emotion. It is told in a beautiful way, that iss incredibly realistic, and transports you to its setting. The myths and stories that are described are very insightful of the tribal culture. The stories were believed whole-heartedly, even though they may seem childish and unbelievable. But it is that childish innocence that allowed these tribes to thrive and live in a peaceful way. The dimension that the vicar from the outside world brings is interesting in the sense that although he symbolises the technology that is overshadowing the tribal culture, he is the one who is trying his best to maintain it. It shows how a simple life can silence the want for a more luxurious one.
All in all, this book is extremely good, and I recommend it as a very interesting read. The author has managed to show a culture that is dying out, without distorting it or adding overly-fictitious elements. Simply beautiful.

amazingly fantastic and gorgeous work of Canadian literature

Hi, everybody. Out of the twenty four books from the school's summer reading list that I have read during the holiday, I chose I Heard the Owl Call My Name, written by Margaret Craven, for my oral report. The book, which can be found under the Canadian Nature section, was Craven's first work and was first published in 1967. With stunning narrative, the plot revolves around a young dying vicar, Mark Brian, who went to an Indian village called Kingcome in the Pacific Northwest completing his last mission (though he did not know he only had three years to live). He had to overcome many great difficulties in order to help and convert these proud, Kwakiutl native people, for the old ones were unreligious while the young ones had little respects toward the old people and the old way of life. His first problem was trying to be accepted into this struggling primitive community, which was starting to be swallowed into white man's world. Then he had to help preserve the old culture of totems and salmons from being replaced by a new culture of alcoholism and residential schools. In the end he did succeed in earning respect and trust, maybe even love, of the people, but, most of all, he learnt a most valuable lesson - the acceptence of death, life and submission, as quoted by the author:
Often in the avalanche of letters I received after I Heard the Owl Call My Name was published, people asked me what disease killed Mark Brian. I don't know. What matters is that he learned more of love and life in his three years with the Indians than most men learn in a long lifetime, and that it was he who thanked them. - from Again Calls the Owl, Craven's autobiography
Margaret Craven, the author, actually went to an Indian village to do her research and learn the culture, the tales as well as the language. Some of the characters and events in the story are based on people she met at the village, and that makes her work much more realistic and believable. Some of the themes discussed in this book are cycles or changes of life, vanishing way of life of the natives, and, most of all, acceptence of death. The only main character is the vicar himself and the conflict of the novel of his being accepted.
The book is fairly simple and straight forward, but the author describes the setting with vivid imagery, which makes me really understand and learn a lot about the Kwakiutl culture and customs, for example, in one of the chapters, she talks about the cannibal dance. The mood remains quite consistent throughout the whole book. It is not really the sadness that urges me to read on - it is the calmness and the selflessness of the native people that are so enchanting, and the closeness with nature as well. I have to agree that the beginning of the book was quite dull to begin with, and the climax did not come until the second last chapter. However, if I really read the book carefully, I can also see that every few chapters is a short, descriptive story by itself, for example, there is one about a few Indian kids going to residential school in Vancouver, and how the elders disapprove the idea. There is also another one which tells about druken Indians being cheated by a white man.
The vocabulary is fairly simple, and the novel can easily be understood by grade nines, but the meaning, or the lessons of this memorable novel really takes someone much older and much more mature to understand and appreciate. Therefore, I would only recommand this book to those of you who enjoy books about nature. All in all, this is a marvelously compelling work of Canadian literature. To conclude my presentation, I am going to read you a short quote that will give you some idea about the author's style:
Under a green spruce Marta stood by herself, her eyes on the young vicar. How thin and white he was! How long had it been there - that look on his face she had seen many times in her long life and knew well? It was not the hard winter that had placed it there. It was death gently reaching out his hand, touching the face gently, even before the owl had called the name.

Beautiful Depiction of Alaskan Native Life

Having lived in Southeast Alaska for two years, in a village that could have served as the model for Kingcome, I find Margaret Craven's book to be magical in its ability to capture the tone of that area and its inhabitants. Her elegantly understated depiction of villagers and their social dynamics, as seen through the eyes of the terminally ill priest, are accurate and reflect what I myself observed in my time in the village of Metlakatla, Alaska. With beautiful descriptions and vivid depictions of the surroundings and lives of the village inhabitants, Ms. Craven draws us into a world few are privileged to experience.

Using a "co-man" is a complex and risky undertaking especially for first timers and this book gives us a good understanding of what the process is like. This can be an overwhelming feeling but this book helps navigate through the process. Ideal for both the experienced food entrepreneur and a novice who is just beginning the process, this book is helpful, provides excellent resources and offers solid, experienced advice. It discusses which tools and resources work best (and which ones don’t!).
I trust William Madden’s depth of knowledge and history in the food industry and his writing style is easy to follow and makes for an interesting read. I found this book to be extremely helpful and informative. It discusses various challenges you can expect to face when looking for a co-manufacturer as well as offers advice on ways to avoid these hurdles before you encounter them. Additionally, the book offers very specific and direct ways to handle these challenges if/when you do encounter them. This book will definitely save you time, money and stress. The practical knowledge I got from this book is equivalent to a 4-year college degree!

An excellent guide to Russian-style programming, very well thought-out.

If you're familiar with Takano's theories or programming at all, you know he's a fan of Russian style programming, and some of his stuff can be a bit "high-brow", meaning lots of complicated programs, prescribed volumes and intensities, etc.

The book starts with a basic review of biology, chemistry, adaptation to training, etc. Being a biology/chemistry geek, much of this wasn't particularly new or interesting to me, but I think it's a good review and probably needs included in the book. If these ideas are new to you, you will probably find it quite helpful, as it does establish a theoretical basis for much of the programming to follow.

Mr. Takano is a big believer in Russian programming, specifically Medvedyev. He continues to categorize lifters by Class III, Class II, Class I, Candidate for Master, etc... He includes training rational and sample programming for each class of trainee. This is far more detailed than anything posted on his website.

For example, in Class III training, he covers the theory behind the training, recommend exercises, volume and intensity, long-term planning, etc. He also provides a sample 4-week loading program and 4-week pre-competition program. I found this training to very closely follow the Medvedyev programming. But if you've ever read the Medvedyev stuff, you know it can sometimes read like stereo instructions. It is not well organized. Mr. Takano is very good at taking this information and laying it out in understandable and applicable ideas and programs.

After going through each class of lifter specifically, Mr. Takano ends the book with discussion of restoratives, diet, and some coaching guidance and tips. The discussion on restoratives focuses on non-pharmacological therapies like massage, jacuzzi, contrast showers, etc. I found this section helpful, but would have preferred a more evidence-based discussion. For example, why exactly is a pine needle bath going to help me? Has this been studied, or am I just going to smell like pine all day and still be sore?

Overall, I'd say it's an excellent book. While I don't say one method of programming is absolutely superior over another, I tend to think the Russian/Chinese method of programming has produced a greater number of champions in the modern drug-tested era. And from what I have seen, there also does seem to be a reduced incidence of major injury with Russian programming. Regardless, the book is quite informative, and I would recommend it if you're at all interested in weightlifting programming.

The Book Is Absolutely Essential!

I just finished Bob Takano's stellar book, Weightlifting Programming: A Winning Coach's Guide. Coach Takano is essentially a demi-god, having been inducted into the USA Weightlifting Hall of Fame as well as being a USAW Senior International Coach. He served as head coach for the international team for many years and produced many quality weightlifters for the USA. When Greg Everett released that he was publishing this book for Coach Takano, I naturally jumped at the opportunity to learn and pre-ordered his book on the pre-release date (I know ... I'm a nerd).

One of my weakest points as an ever-learning coach is the concept of programming. With so many philosophies to choose from, it can be easy to get lost and feel overwhelmed. This book did a phenomenal job at not only explaining an approach to programming, but Coach Takano did a wonderful job at explaining why you choose certain exercises during certain phases of a weightlifter's career. The ease in which he explains the concept of Long Term Athletic Development is incredible. In my pursuit of higher learning, I never encountered someone that was able to break it down into such easy terms. His integration of mathematics, statistics, biology, kinesiology, exercise science, and physics of how they're used in a coach's pursuit of the perfect program for his individual lifters is flawless. There was never a time where I had to re-read a sentence because I couldn't understand the material presented - that only happened because I actually wanted to out of pure fascination and satisfaction. Lastly, his writing style is refreshing. You can tell he is a learned, 40-year biology teacher. It makes me wish I had someone like that in high school or college when I was learning such a key subject.

This book should really be on any person's list to read if you are in strength and conditioning, be it the garage warrior or an experienced coach. Your desire to continue learning and developing yourself should NEVER end, regardless of experience. There are key points that those within the aforementioned range of experience can benefit from. He is not shy at pointing out fundamental flaws in the US' athletic development system and presenting his theory as to why we continue to have an issue with steroids and performance enhancers. His statistics demonstrate just how important quality repetitions are. Regardless if your athlete is a weightlifter or a wrestler, the "perfect practice makes perfect" principle exudes from this well-written book and can be applied to any part of your life. You can see a weightlifter's average intensity remain constant over time, but his volume increases significantly through each stage, therefore making me come to the conclusion that it is absolutely critical to increase the amount of perfect repetitions as the athlete continues to reach top-end strength levels and develops into a high-level athlete. Without it, the athlete won't be able to apply those new strength gains in whatever sport he/she plays, which essentially makes that athlete strong for no good reason. It also compounds the notion that to be good at one movement, you have to drill it perfectly 10,000 times and not necessarily at maximum intensity - the very same theory I heard when I was a wrestler. Pick up this book today!

A vague and reworded discussion on the Soviet style of training.

Pros:
-Takano talks about GPP (General physical preparation) of youth and junior lifters
- Introduces the classifications system used by the Soviets to group lifters according to their snatch and clean and jerk totals
- Suggestions on exercise selection and and frequency based on this class system
- Has charts to match height and gender to weight classes
- Has an interesting recap on the history of Weightlifting in the past hundred years until recently.

Cons:
- Lacks mention of concurrent training (combination of aerobic and anaerobic activities in training)
- Introduces the concept of General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS) but fails to explain how it applies to weightlifting with examples, and therefore, doesn't emphasize it's importance as a concept in training, programming, and periodization.
- Fails to mention the three basic energy systems (Phosphagen, Glycolytic, and Oxidative) that control where we get our energy to perform exercises.
- No mention of the neuromuscular system (Motor unit + Muscle unit) and how it deals with resistance training or how resistance training can alter the body physiologically
- Lack of discussion on "specificity" on both exercise selection and energy systems
- No mention of stress/ recovery/ adaptation as an important concept that ALL coaches must know to create an efficient program.

Summary:
An interesting read but by far NOT A COMPLETE book on programming. This book is essentially the Sparknotes of books translated by Andrew Charniga on Soviet style training manuals. This book is more of a template with some minor explantation of what ins and outs of how to use it, but still leaves me asking many questions on "Why this", "Why that", "What about this"?

Would I recommend this book?
I would. I had the PDF and bought the book because I love weightlifting and I am open minded to all styles and training methods to the competitive weightlifter. However, This should not be your last programming book for weightlifting or training, as there are a lot of very important training concepts not discussed in Takano's book.
